BIOS

This module deepens your understanding on BIOS.

OBJECTIVES:

In this module you will learn

• What is BIOS
• What are the main functions of a BIOS
• How to enter the BIOS or CMOS setup.
• How to clear an unknown BIOS or CMOS password.
• What is UEFI
• Deference between BIOS and UEFI

What to know:

BIOS

Short for Basic Input/Output System, the BIOS (pronounced bye-oss) is a

firmware embedded ROM chip found on motherboards that allows you to access and set
up your computer system at the most basic level. The picture below is an example of
what a BIOS chip may look like on a computer motherboard. The BIOS pictured is of an
early AMIBIOS, a type of BIOS manufactured by AMI.

Common reasons for updating BIOS include fixing bugs or adding features to the
device. This may require ROM integrated circuits to be physically replaced, or flash
memory to be reprogrammed through a special procedure. Firmware such as the ROM
BIOS of a personal computer may contain only elementary basic functions of a device
and may only provide services to higher-level software.

FOUR MAIN FUNCTIONS OF A PC BIOS

1
1. POST (Power On Self Test)- Test the computer hardware and make sure no errors
exist before loading the operating system.
2. Bootstrap Loader - Locate the operating system. If a capable operating system
is located, the BIOS will pass control to it.
3. BIOS drivers - Low-level drivers that give the computer basic operational control
over your computer's hardware.
4. BIOS setup or CMOS setup - Configuration program that allows you to configure
hardware settings including system settings, such as computer passwords, time,
and date.

How to enter the BIOS or CMOS setup

Every computer provides a way to enter the BIOS or CMOS setup. This interface
allows you to configure the basic settings of your computer. To enter the BIOS setup
using one of the five keys.

F1 F2 F10 Del Esc

Once in CMOS setup, the method for changing the settings often depends on the
BIOS manufacturer. You may use the following:
1. Tab and arrow keys to navigate .
2. Page up, Page down, F5 or F6 keys to change the values.
3. Enter or Space bar to select
4. When you are done, press F10 to save changes and exit.

Note: If changes you made appear to revert to default settings or the date and time
setting in the BIOS keeps falling behind, you may need to replace the CMOS battery.

How to Clear an Unknown BIOS or CMOS Password

1. Clear using jumper

On the computer motherboard, locate the BIOS clear or
password jumper or DIP switch and change its position. This
jumper is often labeled CLEAR, CLEAR CMOS, JCMOS1, CLR,
CLRPWD, PASSWD, PASSWORD, PSWD or PWD. To clear,
remove the jumper from the two pins currently covered, and place
it over the two remaining jumpers. An example of the various
jumper positions is shown in the image. Some computers may
also clear the password by keeping the jumper open (one or no pins covered).

2
2. Remove CMOS battery

Removing the CMOS battery, like the one shown in the

picture, causes the system to lose all CMOS settings, including
the BIOS password. Locate and remove the CMOS battery
from the motherboard for at least five minutes, then replace the
battery and turn the computer back on

Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)

UEFI is a firmware interface for computers and it

works as a "middleman" to connect a computer's
firmware to its operating system. It is used to
initialize the hardware components and start the
operating system stored on the hard disk drive
when the computer starts up.. UEFI replaces the
legacy Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)
firmware interface originally present in all IBM PC-
compatible personal computers, with most UEFI
firmware implementations providing support for
legacy BIOS services.

UEFI Advantages over BIOS

BIOS (Old) UEFI (New)

Blue Screen that resembles the BSOD User friendly, graphical user interface
Cannot recognize larger storage drives Recognizes larger storage drives.
Only able to use keyboard Able to use a mouse in the interface
Secure Boot – built in feature in UEFI
that stops any digitally unsigned drives
from loading and helps to stop
malicious software, such as rootkits.

Directions: Write True if the statement is correct, and False if the statement is wrong.

___________1. BIOS and UEFI are examples of a firmware.

___________ 2. F1, F2, F8, Del, Esc are keyboard keys which are used to access BIOS.
___________ 3. Tab and Arrow keys are used to change values on BIOS.
___________ 4. CR2032 is the most common value of CMOS Battery.
___________ 5. Removing CMOS battery resets the BIOS Settings.
___________ 6. Both keyboard and mouse can be used on changing BIOS settings.
___________ 7. F10 is used to save and exit on BIOS.
___________ 8. Secure Boot is a built in feature in BIOS that stops any digitally
unsigned drives from loading and helps to stop malicious software, such
as rootkits.
___________ 9. If changes you made appear to revert to default settings or the date and
time setting in the BIOS keeps falling behind, you may need to replace
the CMOS battery.
___________ 10. Common reasons for updating BIOS include fixing bugs or adding
features to the device.
