Course Subject: Building Technology 05

Course Requirement: Retrofitting of Existing Commercial Structure

Plate 01: Case Study

Guidelines:

1. Selection of Building: Choose a commercial building that is 2-3 storeys high and
shows signs of deterioration or structural weakness.
2. Documentation:
o Photographs: Capture detailed photos of the building's exterior and interior,
including structural elements like columns, beams, and slabs. Pay attention to
cracks, spalling, and other signs of distress.
o As-Built Plans: Obtain or create accurate as-built plans of the building,
including floor plans, elevations, and sections.
3. Case Study Report:
o Statement of the Problem: Clearly identify the structural and non-structural
issues affecting the building's performance and safety.
o Synthesis: Analyze the collected data and discuss the potential causes of the
identified problems.
o Conclusion: Summarize the key findings of the case study.
o Recommendations: Propose potential retrofitting strategies to address the
identified problems and improve the building's structural integrity and overall
performance.

Grading Criteria:

Quality of Documentation: 40% (Clarity, completeness, and relevance)

Depth of Analysis: 30% (Thoroughness of problem identification and causal analysis)
Feasibility of Recommendations: 30% (Practicality and effectiveness of proposed
retrofitting strategies)

Note: Print on an A4 sheet of bond paper.

Plate 02: Architectural and Structural Details

Guidelines:

1. Design Philosophy: Develop a design concept that addresses the building's structural
deficiencies and improves its functionality and aesthetics.
2. Architectural Plans:
o Floor Plans
o Section (Cross & Longitudinal)
o Add necessary structural details included on the retrofit
3. Structural Plans:
o Structural Drawings: Provide spot details of the proposed additional structural
reinforcements, including the type and size of materials to be used.

Grading Criteria:

● Design Quality: 20% (Creativity, functionality, and aesthetics of the design)

● Structural Adequacy: 15% (Correctness of structural calculations and appropriateness
of proposed reinforcements)
● Feasibility of Implementation: 15% (Practicality and constructability of the proposed
design)

Note: Solutions shall be printed on an A3 sheet.

Plate 02.1: Oral Presentation

1. Introduction

● Building Overview:
o Brief history or background of the building
o Location and significance
o Current use and occupancy
● Problem Statement:
o Identify the primary structural and interior issues or deficiencies
o Explain how these issues impact the building's functionality and safety

2. Existing Conditions

● Structural Assessment:
o Highlight any structural weaknesses or damages
● Interior Assessment:
o Analyze the current interior layout and spatial organization
o Identify any functional deficiencies or code violations

3. Proposed Retrofitting Measures

● Structural Retrofitting:
o Propose specific structural interventions to address the identified issues
o Explain the proposed techniques (e.g., reinforcement, jacketing, seismic
retrofitting)
o Justify the choice of materials and construction methods
● Interior Retrofitting:
o Discuss the functional improvements and aesthetic enhancements
o Explain the proposed changes to the layout
o Consider accessibility and universal design principles

4. Conclusion

● Summarize the key findings of your assessment and proposed retrofitting measures
● Highlight the expected benefits of the proposed interventions (e.g., improved safety,
energy efficiency, functionality, and aesthetics)
● Address any potential challenges or limitations

Presentation Tips

● Visual Aids: Bring your own laptop & Use clear and concise powerpoint slides to
enhance your presentation.
o Use high-quality images, diagrams, to illustrate your points.
