Lesson Objective
To learn how to round off decimal numbers to a given number of decimal places or to
the nearest whole number.
Use also as an opportunity to revise place value for decimals and to use the word integer
as an alternative to ‘whole number’.
The later sections revise other types of calculations where the answers need to be rounded
off including money calculations where the answer in pounds has to be rounded to the
nearest penny.
Key Vocabulary
Activities
The activities for rounding to the nearest whole number encourage the idea of thinking
about which two whole numbers the number is in between before deciding which is closer.
This method is a useful run in to the formal method for rounding off.
Draw a line to show where the number gets cut off when it is rounded off.
Point out that it is just a convention that numbers like 14.65 get rounded up to 14.7 when
they are just as close to 14.6. Remind students that 56.2 is the same number as 56.20
The hardest examples are where, for example 45.6982 rounds off to 45.70 to two decimal
places. The extra zero can be left there to show that the number was rounded to 2 d.p.
