Theorem 2 (Properties of Double Integrals) Let f, g be continuous over

a closed, bounded plane region D and let c be a constant.

Evaluation of Double Integrals
In two special cases of D we can calculate double integrals using iterated
(repeated) integration.
The region in the plane is called vertically simple if it could be defined as:

D = {(x, y)|a Æ x Æ b, g1 (x) Æ y Æ g2 (x)}

Theorem 3 (Fubini’s Theorem) Let D = {(x, y)| a Æ x Æ b, g1 (x) Æ

y Æ g2 (x)} be a vertically simple region and f a continuous function on the
domain D.

⁄⁄ ⁄ b ⁄ g (x)
2
f (x, y) dA = f (x, y) dy dx
D a g1 (x)

The integral on the right side is the iterated integral. Inside integration
is done with respect to variable y (x is treated as a constant). Once the
inside integration is done we proceed with the outside integration. Keep in
mind that the outside limits are always constant and the inside limits might
depend on the outside variable.
s g (x)
For a fixed value of x, g12(x) f (x, y) dy represents
the area of the cross section S(x0 ). If we think of
S(x0 ) dx as a tiny slice of a "toaster bread" then
sb
a S(x) dx naturally represents the volume of the
"whole loaf".
Dually, we can do the integration over the horizontally simple region.

⁄⁄ ⁄ d ⁄ h (y)
2
f (x, y) dA = f (x, y) dx dy
D c h1 (y)

In this case y is the outside variable

and x is the inside variable. Now the
slices have the area S(y) and we are do-
ing the summation of S(y) dy volumes
with respect to y.
