Reflection paper 20% Individual See Appendix 5

• Since this should be a reflection of your own course experience, no reason to use GAI.
• No AI content is allowed in the final submission. Detected usage will be reviewed and
penalized.

For this assessment you are to hand in an individual reflection paper (800-
word limit; figures and other creative presentations are all welcome). This
assignment accounts for 20% of your grade. The 800-word limit excludes titles
for figures and tables; paragraph headers; in-text citations and reference list (if
any). This paper gives you an opportunity to reflect on your learning journey
during the module and the insights you gained from CC0007. Write a paper that
discusses the impact of this course’s experience on your adoption of an
interdisciplinary perspective. The assignment is due Week 13 on your tutorial day
23:59 in NTULearn. (For example, if your tutorial session falls on Monday, it
would be due Week 13, Monday 23:59). Additional points to note:
• This is not English composition. We will not penalise for poor grammar, nor
award higher marks for fancy language.
• This is a personal reflection based on your course experience, not the
experience of your friend who has taken the course earlier.
• Given the above, there is no reason to use Generative AI for your work, so GAI
tools are strictly not permitted.
Please submit the “Declaration of Academic Integrity” to the appropriate portal.
The grading rubric is as follows:

Personal response to the course experience

• Provides a clear description of their intellectual and
emotional response to the experience.
• There is clear and thoughtful reflection.
• The reflection is relevant to the course and shows
depth and personalisation.

Impact of course experience on interdisciplinary perspective

• The reflection provides a clear analysis of the
impact of the course experience on own
interdisciplinary perspective.
• Insightful assessment of the
disciplinary/interdisciplinary dimensions of
learning/teamwork in the course.
• Relevant details are used to support the reflection.

Critical Thinking • Reflection displays insight and depth of thought.

• Able to make connections between course
content/experience and real-world applications.

Organisation, Presentation and Style

• Content is well-structured, logical, and the flow is
natural.
• Paragraphs are well- focused and coherent.
CC0007 SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FOR HUMANITY personal reflection

As a mechanical engineering student, I am deeply humbled and inspired

by the diverse and unique individuals I have met in this collaborative
class. Every student I have interacted with in class have contributed to my
understanding of the world I live in and appreciate every unique
perspective which I otherwise would not have pondered upon.

I would also like to take this opportunity to Thank all the Teaching/
supporting staff, invited talkers and cluster managers for their great work
and effort to make our experience in class as engaging as possible. Most
of us enjoyed our time here!

The weekly sessions have lead us through many different subsets of life
that science and technology have impacted. It provided me with an
unhindered bird’s eye view of the issues in society today and make it
easier to process how can we think and innovate.

I did not expect the topic of elderly and genetics to randomly appear in
CC0007 class which was supposed to be about science and technology.
However, I soon realized how shallow my concept of the class was.
Science and technology have everything to do with humanity. In fact, it
was science, and technology was created to make human lives more
convenient and enjoyable. Increasing proportion of elderly who tend to be
less tech-savvy around the world coincided with the rapid shift of
communication technology created impending issues to be addressed.

Aging affects Singapore especially hard which is by the proportional of

sessions dedicated to it. I learned the complications of integrating science
and technology into the lives of people at their later stages of life.
Considering technology progression has been growing at its fastest in the
history of humanity, the elders must accept and adapt to the different
ways which the society have normalised technology. I also considered the
fact that technology could be beneficial to a group in society yet may not
be the best for others. I considered maximise the benefits of technologies
implemented into society which tuning and adjusting it to minimise any
unintended difficulties and issues it may cause to another group.

I have also been able to empathise with the various levels of health and
functional limitations brought about by aging, which technology can help
to address or even overcome. With better understanding of what the
elders will eventually be facing, it helps us to come up with solutions that
is more holistic and purposeful. The segment on aging also prompted me
to reflect and be more sensitive when interacting with elder now that I
have a clearer understanding of what they may be going through.
We eventually concluded the topic on the sad reality of end-of-life
planning. This segment got me to reflect and consider a lot of what I
would usually brush off as “problem in the far future”. Not only I have a
better understanding of the procedure and government framework that
have been set up for Singaporeans, but I also understand that a large part
of it must be the decisions made by the individuals before it is too late.

In the segment of Artificial Intelligence, we explored the beginning and

motivation behind AI creation and the models that they were based on –
Our brain. Different evolution of AI model was introduced which I find
smart. The model that caught my attention was machine learning where
perceptrons are grouped in layers and “trained” for different situations.
This makes AI versatile and applicable for any industry.

AI and the ethics of its usage – if we can no longer understand the

complex algorithms that trained AI is based on, how sure/ credible is the
results of the AI? In the context of medical prediction and checks with AI,
how ethical can we diagnose patients according to the results provided by
AI? The topic on explainable AI really got me thinking hard. I learn how
Discriminative AI classify, predict and cluster information for data
handling.

Generative AI may not be new to university students, yet the class gave
me a much more complete understanding of Gen AI and how it grew from
Natural Language Processing.

Algorithmic Prediction also opened my eyes to the world where the

internet records our every digital footprint and maybe partially recreate
our behaviour. Kind of creepy.

The final topic is especially interesting on the topic of trust. We learnt the
use of authoritative means, familiarity (using familiar faces, shared values
or even professionals), rewarding programs to build exclusivity.

The importance of trust, between various organisation and the public is

reflected by the cost, time and effort involved. Sometimes uncertainty due
to novelty can disrupt the confidence in the public.

Use of middleman, intermediaries, platform helps to create a safe and

accountable environment, however cost of involving such means are
increasing.

More difficult to build trust, even authoritative one. AI exacerbate the

issue with the ease of creating realistic deepfakes and fake news, which
erodes conventional trust in society. Blockchain- A database
(decentralised) ledger, therefore, plays a big role by providing
accountability.

Interesting discussions includes bank as a trustable platform in the

predigital era, which facilitated monetary transactions that otherwise
would be hindered by trust. Deliberate use of celebrities for advertising.
Donation of goods may not be used for their intended purposes. Facilitate
sale of NFTs, artwork can be sold by a village child. However, the online
fee maybe high.

Trust less society with blockchain

The trend of the next big things truly made an impact/ most powerful
when we do not thing of them/ let it run at the back without thinking of it.
