SUBJECTCODE: 21EE744
Module:1&2
Q Questions CO/PO
NO.
1. Define electrical drives and state the advantages and disadvantages of CO1/PO1
electrical drive

2. Compare AC and DC drive. Also state the applications of drives CO1/PO1

3. With a neat block diagram, explain the various components of Electrical CO1/PO1
Drive.

4. Mention and discuss the factors considered for the choice of electric drives. CO1/PO1

5. Explain the speed torque conventions and multi quadrant operation of a motor CO1/PO1
driving hoist load.

6. Obtain the expressions for equivalent moment of inertia and load torques of a CO1/PO1
motor drive with translational and rotational motion loads.

7. With relevant block diagram discuss the operation of closed loop control of CO2/PO1
drive system incorporating speed and current loop.

8. Explain the single phase fully controlled rectifier control of separately excited CO2/PO1
dc motor. Obtain the expressions for discontinuous conduction mode
9. Explain the chopper control of separately excited dc motor. CO2/PO1

10. A 200V, 875 rpm, 150 A separately excited dc motor has an armature CO2/PO1
resistance of 600 ohm. It is fed from a single phase fully controlled rectifier
with an ac source voltage of 220V, 50 Hz. Assuming continuous conduction,
calculate 1)firing angle for rated motor torque and 750 rpm 2) firing angle for
rated motor torque and -500 rpm 3) motor speed for firing angle 160 degree
and rated torque.

11. A 230V, 960 rpm and 200 A separately excited dc motor has an armature CO2/PO1
resistance of 0.02 ohm. The motor is fed from a chopper which provides both
motoring and braking operations. The source has a voltage of 230V. Assuming
continuous conduction.
1) Calculate duty ratio of chopper for motoring operation at rated torque
and 350 rpm.
2) Calculate duty ratio of chopper for braking operation at rated torque
and 350 rpm.
3) If max duty ratio of chopper is limited to 0.95 and max permissible
motor current is twice the rated, calculate max permissible motor speed
obtainable without field weakening and power fed to the source

12. Discuss the multi quadrant operation of dc separately excited motor fed from CO2/PO1
fully controlled rectifier.
