8. WEATHER DATA
8.1. Introduction
Weather information for TRNSYS simulations can either be provided in one of many standard weather
data formats or can be in user-supplied files of measured data. Type 15 processes the standard format
files and includes modes for TRNSYS TMY, TMY2, TMY3, EPW, IWEC, Meteonorm and German TRY.
User-supplied weather data can be read using Type 99 or a combination of Type 9 and Type 16.
Some sample weather files are included with the standard installation and others are available in the
extended weather set or for download from the internet. The source and availability of each of the data
types will be discussed in the next sections.
Weather files distributed with TRNSYS are copyrighted by their respective owners. They
may not be redistributed in any form without prior consent from their owner. Neither the
weather files owners nor The TRNSYS developers can accept any liability concerning the
use of the weather files. The user shall be responsible for checking the correctness and
plausibility of the results by applying state-of-the-art control procedures.
The TMY2 data sets for the US and their manual were produced by the National
Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) Analytic Studies Division under the Resource
Assessment Program, which is funded and monitored by the U.S. Department of
Energy's Office of Solar Energy Conversion.
The weather files in the "Meteonorm" directory (and subdirectories) were generated
using Meteonorm Version 5. MeteoNorm is published by METEOTEST
(http://www.meteotest.com) – authors: METEOTEST, Jan Remund, Stefan Kunz).
The TMY3 data sets and manual were produced by NREL's Electric Systems Center
under the Solar Resource Characterization Project, which is funded and monitored by the
U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office.
The use of weather files distributed with TRNSYS implies the acceptance of the above-mentioned license
agreement.

TRNSYS 18 – Weather Data
8.2.1. Introduction
The US-TMY files were derived from the 1952-1975 SOLMET/ERSATZ data base. TRNSYS can read a
modified format of the original TMY files. Neither the TMY nor the TRNSYS-TMY format files are still
available and this mode is retained for historical reasons. There is one sample TRNSYS-TMY file in the
“Weather/US-TMY” folder.
8.3.1. Introduction
The TMY2s are data sets of hourly values of solar radiation and meteorological elements for a 1-year
period. Their intended use is for computer simulations of solar energy conversion systems and building
systems to facilitate performance comparisons of different system types, configurations, and locations in
the United States and its territories. Because they represent typical rather than extreme conditions, they
are not suited for designing systems to meet the worst-case conditions occurring at a location.
The TMY2 data sets and manual were produced by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's
(NREL's) Analytic Studies Division under the Resource Assessment Program, which is funded and
monitored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Solar Energy Conversion.
The TMY2 data are included in the TRNSYS 18 distribution with NREL's permission. They can also be
downloaded from NREL's Renewable Resource Data Center (http://rredc.nrel.gov). For more information,
TRNSYS users can check the references mentioned at the end of this chapter (Marion, 1995; Marion and
Urban, 1995a and 1995b).
The "Weather\US-TMY2" directory contains the data files for the typical meteorological year (TMY) data
sets derived from the 1961-1990 National Solar Radiation Data Base (NSRDB). The data set is known as
"TMY2" to distinguish it from the earlier TMY data set derived from the 1952-1975 SOLMET/ERSATZ
data base.

8.4.1. Introduction
The TMY3s are data sets of hourly values of solar radiation and meteorological elements for a 1-year
The “Weather\US-TMY3” folder contains the data files for the typical meteorological year (TMY) data sets
derived from the 1961-1990 and 1991-2005 National Solar Radiation Data Base (NSRDB) archives.
Because they are based on more recent and accurate data, these new TMY3 data sets are
recommended for use in place of earlier TMY2 data. The TMY3 data set contains data for 1020 locations,
compared with 239 for the TMY2 data set.
The TMY3 data sets and manual were produced by NREL's Electric Systems Center under the Solar
Resource Characterization Project, which is funded and monitored by the U.S. Department of Energy's
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office.
The TMY3 data are included in the TRNSYS 18 distribution with NREL's permission. They can also be
downloaded from NREL's Renewable Resource Data Center (http://rredc.nrel.gov). For more information,
TRNSYS users can check the references mentioned at the end of this chapter (Wilcox and Marion, 2008).

8.5.1. Introduction
The EPW file format was created for the EnergyPlus software but is in a format that Type 15 can read
and process. The files are data sets of hourly values of solar radiation and meteorological elements for a
1-year period. Their intended use is for computer simulations of solar energy conversion systems and
building systems to facilitate performance comparisons of different system types, configurations, and
locations. Because they represent typical rather than extreme conditions, they are not suited for designing
systems to meet the worst-case conditions occurring at a location.
Weather data for more than 2100 locations are now available in EPW format — 1042 locations in the
USA, 71 locations in Canada, and more than 1000 locations in 100 other countries throughout the world.
The weather data are arranged by World Meteorological Organization region and Country.
8–7
TRNSYS 18 – Weather Data
The “Weather\EPW” folder contains a couple of sample data files in the EPW format. The EPW files can
be downloaded at https://energyplus.net/weather or http://climate.onebuilding.org/.
8.6.1. Introduction
International Weather for Energy Calculations (IWEC) data files were developed by ASHRAE and contain
"typical" weather files, suitable for use with building energy simulation programs, for 3,012 locations
outside the USA and Canada. The files are derived from Integrated Surface Hourly (ISH) weather data
originally archived at the National Climatic Data Center.
For these selected locations, the ISH database contains weather observations on average at least four
times per day of wind speed and direction, sky cover, visibility, ceiling height, dry-bulb temperature, dew-
point temperature, atmospheric pressure, liquid precipitation, and present weather for at least 12 years of
record up to 25 years. Because the ISH database contains no measured solar radiation, the hourly total
horizontal solar radiation is calculated using an empirical model based on the sun-earth geometry,
reported cloud cover, temperature difference from three hours previously, relative humidity, and wind
speed.
A second empirical model is used to calculate direct normal solar radiation based on the solar angle and
the ratio of the derived total global horizontal compared to the extraterrestrial solar radiation. Other
models then use these derived solar radiation values to calculate various illuminances (global horizontal,
direct normal, diffuse horizontal) and zenith luminance that are useful for daylighting studies.
The “Weather\IWEC” folder contains a sample data file in the IWEC format. The IWEC files can be
purchased from ASHRAE at https://www.ashrae.org/resources--publications/bookstore/international-
weather-for-energy-calculations.
8.7.1. Introduction
The data file distributed with TRNSYS 18 that were generated using Meteonorm are distributed under
license from Meteotest. All files were generated using default options in Meteonorm V 5.0.13. The
"TMY2" output format is used because it is easily read by Type 15. The weather and radiation data is
based on monthly values that Meteonorm generates stochastically to hourly values.

using those files. For all weather files included with TRNSYS, it is always the responsibility of users to
check the correctness and plausibility of the results.
Available stations are listed in the following sections. The filenames have the following format:

TRNSYS 18 – Weather Data
Weather Bank - WeatherBank maintains hourly and daily historical data records from every
National Weather Service reporting station in the United States, as well as other locations around
the world. They archive weather data on a real-time basis and certain updates are made hourly.
This hourly archiving began in late November, 1994.
National Center for Environmental Information - National Center for Environmental Information
(NCEI) is the world's largest active archive of weather data. NCEI produces numerous climate
publications and responds to data requests from all over the world. NCEI operates the World
Data Center for Meteorology which is co-located at NCEI in Asheville, North Carolina, and the
World Data Center for Paleoclimatology which is located in Boulder, Colorado.
Weather Source - Weather Source provides historical and real-time digital weather information for
more than 10,000 locations across the United States and around the world.
Weather Analytics - Site specific weather files in EnergyPlus format based on your choice of the
most current 30, 15, or 10 years of hourly data are now available from the private sector company
Weather Analytics for any official weather station on more than 650,000 35-km grid tiles across
the globe. These files are built by integrating hourly weather station observations and the new
NOAA reanalysis data sets. Both Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) files and individual, Actual
Meteorological Year (AMY) files are available, as are files constructed from the previous 12
months.

TRNSYS 18 – Weather Data
White Box Technologies - WBT provides instant web access to the following weather data sets
that are immediately ready for use:
1. ASHRAE IWEC2 (International Weather for Energy Calculations) "typical year" weather
files for 3,012 international locations outside of US and Canada. IWEC2 weather files can
be purchased online either individually, in country and region sets, or even the entire set
of 3,012 in alternate formats such as *.epw or *.BINM. For a complete list of all 3,012
IWEC2 files, please see: www.whiteboxtechnologies.com/IWEC2_locations.txt . IWEC2
weather files were developed in a 4-year ASHRAE research project (RP-1477), and
distributed by WBT on agreement with ASHRAE. The IWEC2 weather files come in these
three standard formats: *IW2.CSV, *.BINM, and *.EPW + *.DDY.
2. Historical year weather files from 2001 through the current year for over 10,000 stations
around the world, including over 2,000 US and 400 Canadian stations (earlier years are
also available upon request). For a complete list of all 2015 files, please see:
www.whiteboxtechnologies.com/ISH2015_USACan_locations.txt or
www.whiteboxtechnologies.com/ISH2015_Intern_locations.txt These historical year
weather files cost were developed using similar raw data and processing software to the
IWEC2 files. The historical year weather files come in thhese three standard formats:
*_FIN4.TXT , *.BINM, and *.EPW + *.DDY.
Both data sets are based on actual recordings from official weather stations around the world
going back up to 25 years and archived as the Integrated Surface Hourly Database (ISD) by the
(US) National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI). Extensive processing equivalent in
scope to the TMY3 files has resulted in complete weather files with solar radiation, daylight
illuminance, and precipitation, in addition to the standard parameters of temperature, humidity,
pressure, wind speed and direction, etc. For more details, please go to:

8.9.1. Introduction
TRNSYS offers to methods for processing user-defined weather data which does not conform to one of
the standard formats. One is to use Type99 which can interpret weather data supplied in a specific
format. The other is to use Type9 to read the weather data file and Type16 to interpret the solar radiation
data. See the Mathematical Reference volume of the documentation set for more information on these
Types.
