1. Definition of matter
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space(volume) Volume and mass.
2. Be able to identify and describe the main subclasses of matter (your matter diagram)
Pure substances and mixtures. A mixture is a physical reaction between two or more substances. A pure
substance is a single substance.
3. Be able to explain the difference between an element, a compound and a mixture.
4. For each of the quantities below, explain what it is, identify the units used to measure it and include any
formulas.
a. mass
b. volume
c. Density
d. Heat capacity
e. Specific heat
5. Law of Conservation of Matter
a. What does the Law of Conservation of Matter state and what does it mean?
b. How does the Law of Conservation of Matter relate to the count and mass of products and
reactants?
c. What is a combustion reaction?
d. What are the products of a combustion reaction?
6. What factors affect global temperature change?
7. What happens when molecules are heated
8. Describe absolute zero
9. Explain how ice cools down a glass of juice. Include an explanation on how heat flows.
10. What is a calorimeter and what does it do?
11. Using a diagram, explain the greenhouse effect.
12. What is albedo? Give an example of how it could affect the greenhouse effect.
13. Based on what we learned in class, how do global temperatures affect sea level and global ice mass?
Based on the graphs from class, how are global temperature, sea level and ice mass related? Make sure
to use the terms directly or inversely related.
14. It has been hypothesized in class that iceberg and glacier melt will lead to sea level rise. Identify at
least two different ways that the glaciers are melted. Use diagrams to explain your answer.
15. How much heat is needed to heat 500 g of water from 0 oC to 30 oC?
16. Calculate the heat absorbed by a 10,000 g iron weight that warms up 12 degrees in the sun. (specific
heat of iron is .45)
17. Calculate the specific heat of 500 g of a substance that requires 1000 joules of heat to increase the
temperature 10.0 oC.
18. A pot of water sits on a stove and absorbs 800,000 J of heat as it heats up from 25 oC to 100 oC. What is
the mass of the water?
19. How are temperature, kinetic energy and motion of molecules related?
20. Using the graph to the right, answer the following:
a. Where does temperature change?
b. Where does the temperature remain the same?
c. If the diagram to the right is a diagram of water being heated
from -20oC to 120oC explain the shape. There are 5 distinct parts
you should explain. As part of the explanation describe what is happening to temperature,
molecular motion and give an example.
21. Classifying Matter: From the list below, identify the compounds, elements, and mixture

carbon dioxide (CO2) salsa
Calcium distilled water
Iron Lemonade
Glucose (C6H12O6) The earth’s atmosphere
Sea water a copper penny
22. Chemical Reactions and Physical Changes: Identify the following as either a chemical reaction or a
physical change:
Burning sugar A soda losing its carbonation (fizz)
Breaking a piece of glass Rotting cheese
Dissolving sugar into salt water Crushing chalk into powder
Melting iron Respiration
23. Characteristics of matter: For the following, explain what it is. Include formula and units.
f. mass
g. volume
h. density.
