LESSON 2.

APPROXIMATION
USING TAYLOR’S
POLYNOMIALS
DEFINITION
A Taylor series approximation uses a Taylor series to
represent a number as a polynomial that has a very
similar value to the number in a neighborhood around a
specified xx value.

Taylor series are extremely powerful tools for

approximating functions that can be difficult to
compute otherwise, as well as evaluating infinite sums
and integrals by recognizing Taylor series.
KNOWING...
Polynomial functions such as f(x)=3x³-x²+2x-7 can be
evaluated by using by basic adition,
subtraction,multiplication and division.

How ever many functions cannot such as; f(x)= eˣ,

sin(2x),log₂(x).

Sometimes, it is helpful to have a polynomial that can

be used to approximate functions like the tylor’s
function approsimation.
FORMULA.

f’(c) f’’(c) f’’’(c)

Pₙ(x)= f(c) + (x-c)+ (x-c)² + (x-c)³ +...
1! f(x)=
+ f(c)
2! + 3!

+... fⁿ(c)
(x-c)ⁿ
n!
EXAMPLE 1.

Find the 4th degree taylor polynomial for f(x) = ln(x) centered at c=1 and use it to approximate ln(1.1).
EXAMPLE 1.
EXAMPLE 2.

Determine the 5th degree Taylor polynomial centered at c = 0 for given function f(x)= cos(x) and give
the function’s approximation cos(4.5).
