Windows Backup
LEARNING OBJECTIVE`
A server accountable for backing up and restoring files, folders, databases and hard
drives on a network to avoid the loss of data in the event of a hard drive failure, user
error, disaster or accident.
Numerous backup server products and services available from third-party vendors,
Microsoft Windows Server operating systems also include a built-in Windows Server
Backup feature that can be used to perform basic backup and recovery operations on
backup servers.
An alternative to standard backup server software tools are online backup and
recovery services that save your network's data to a remote location in the cloud.
You can use Windows Server Backup to back up a full server (all volumes), a selected
list of volumes, the system state, or specific files or folders and to create a backup that
you can use for bare metal recovery.
Note: One thing to keep in mind is that you cannot recover backups with Windows Server
Backup that were created in earlier versions of Windows with Ntbackup. However, a read-
only version of Ntbackup is freely available if you want to recover data from backups created
using Ntbackup, and can be installed to recover files on Windows Server 2008 R2 and
Windows 7.
