Part 3. Time. Strategy practice. When? Directions.
Listen to the conversations on
the audio and then answer the following questions. Remember to use the listening strategies described on page 74. Number 1. Our offices are cleaned on Monday and Wednesday. Do you think they should be cleaned on Friday too? I think twice a week is enough. Two times is hardly enough. How often are the offices cleaned? Number 2. Is the coffee machine working yet? Yes, it took all morning to fix it. I'm sure it will be broken again before too long. Well, enjoy your coffee while you can. How long did it take to fix the coffee machine? Number 3. We need a new coffee machine. It takes one minute just to copy eight pages. That's really slow. That's less than 500 pages an hour. We'll never get it finished at this rate. How long does it take to make eight copies? Number 4. Every time I call this number, I get a busy signal. How often have you tried? Every hour. I'll try one more time. How often has the man tried to call? Number 5. When does the mail come? It usually comes just before noon, but sometimes earlier. Good. I hope it's early today. Expecting something important? When does the mail come? Number 6. Your check was put in the mail yesterday, Mr. Brennan. Yesterday? That means it will arrive next week. If it doesn't arrive by Friday, give me a call. You bet I will. When was the check sent? Number 7. Mr. Chu joined the company in August. Didn't Ms. Wallace join in August too? Yes, but Mr. Chu joined the year before. How time flies? When did Ms. Wallace join the company? Number 8. Are we going at 5 or 6 o'clock? We're going at 6. The show starts at 7. Good. I don't want to be late. I know you'd rather wait for an hour than be late by five minutes. When are the speakers going? Number 9. I visited my aunt in the hospital last night. How long has she been sick? She's been sick a long time, but she just went to the hospital last week. That's a long time to be in the hospital. I hope she gets while soon. When did the woman visit her at? Number 10. I took Mizono to the airport yesterday. We almost missed the plane. We got there with only a half hour to spare. I hear she'll be gone for three weeks. No, only for two. How long will Mizono be away? Number 11. We've been working on this report for three days now. Do you think we'll have it done by the end of the week? No, but I hope we can finish it before the meeting next Tuesday. How long have they been working on the report? Number 12. How does Lucy like her new job? She loves it so far, but she's been there only a week. Only a week. I thought she'd been there for at least a month. She had her first interview last month. When did Lucy start her new job? Number 13. Did you read that email message that Bill sent to everyone? Yes, I read it this morning and I plan to answer it after lunch. I sent him my answer last night. What's your hurry? When did the woman read the email message? Number 14. Did you stop painting your house today? Actually, we started last weekend. It'll probably take about two weeks to complete the job. Two weeks to paint that huge house? You'll have to work night and day to finish that fast. I'll have lots of help. How long will it take to paint the house? Number 15. Are you ready for the weekly staff meeting today? No. I worked on this report all day yesterday, but I'm still not ready. I know. We should have these meetings once a month, not once a week. Once every four weeks. That's a good idea. How often do they have a staff meeting?
