“ Introduction to Vibration

and Free Response ”

Dynamics : the branch of mechanics concerned with the
motion of bodies under the action of forces.

Key
Terminologies
Natural frequency : the rate at which a body vibrates when
disturbed without being subject to a driving or damping
force.

Resonance : a phenomenon that occurs when the

matching vibrations of another object increase the
amplitude of an object’s oscillations.

Amplitude : the maximum displacement or distance

moved by a point on a vibrating body or wave measured
from its equilibrium position.
Vibration
subdiscipline of dynamics
that deals with repetitive
motion
Speaker Engine

Washing Doorbell
Machine
Free Vibration

Three
Where no external force acts after the initial
disturbance.
ex. swing

types of Forced Vibration

vibration
Where an external force continuously acts on
the system.
ex. washing machine

Damped Vibration
vibrations that decrease in amplitude over time
due to resistive forces
ex. suspension system of a car
Simple Difference
Free Vibration: Moves Forced Vibration: Keeps Damped Vibrations:
on its own after an initial moving because of a Movement that slows
push repeated push or force. down and stops due to
resistance
Free
Response

Natural behavior of a system after it

has been disturbed and left to
vibrate without any external forces
acting on it.
Free Vibration and Free
Response
Free Vibration Free Response

describe the entire motion of the

focuses on the motion itself
system over time
Undamped Free Response

Two types
The system oscillates indefinitely without any
energy loss.

of Free
ex. tuning fork hitting a surface

Damped Free Response

Response The system experiences a reduction in
oscillation amplitude over time due to internal
or external resistance.

ex. door closer
