Overview of QS and Times Higher Education Ranking System
QS Ranking System:
QS Ranking is a system that ranks universities and colleges around the world. It was created by a
company called QS (Quacquarelli Symonds). It is widely used by students, parents, and
educators to compare universities globally and make decisions about where to study or teach.
The QS Ranking system evaluates universities using six main criteria Academic Reputation
(40%), Employer Reputation (10%), Faculty/Student Ratio (20%), Citations per Faculty (20%),
International Faculty Ratio (5%), and International Student Ratio (5%)
Each of these factors contributes to a university’s overall QS score, which determines its place in
the rankings. Universities that excel across multiple categories tend to rank higher. According to
QS ranking 2025, the top 5 universities in the world are
The QS Ranking is popular because it provides a trusted way to see which universities are
considered among the best worldwide.
The Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking is a system that ranks universities worldwide based
on how well they perform in areas like teaching, research, and international outlook. It was
created by a company called Times Higher Education and it is one of the most trusted rankings
globally and is often used by students and educators to compare universities.
THE Ranking focuses on five main areas: Teaching (30%), Research (30%), Citations (30%),
International Outlook (7.5%), and Industry Income (2.5%). Each university gets a score in these
categories, which combines to form an overall score and rank. The higher a university scores
across these areas, the higher it ranks. According to THE Ranking 2025, the top 5 universities in
the world are
1. University of Oxford
2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
3. Harvard University
4. Princeton University
5. University of Cambridge
The THE Ranking is widely respected because it balances multiple aspects of university
performance, not just academic reputation.
Bangladeshi Universities:
Their Research output is generally lower, with fewer publications in high-impact journals.
Limited funding, resources, and facilities make it challenging for Bangladeshi universities to
produce research at the same scale and impact as top global universities.
Faculty-student ratios are generally higher. Due to a lack of resources, there are fewer faculty
members relative to the large student population, which can impact the quality of education and
individualized support.
International faculty and student ratios are much lower, as these universities primarily serve local
students. A more localized focus can limit exposure to global perspectives but meets the needs of
the national population.
Their industry connections and funding opportunities are limited compared to top global
universities. While there are collaborations with local industries, they are generally smaller in
scale, impacting funding for research and practical learning experiences.
Many universities face challenges like crowded classrooms, limited lab space, and a lack of
modern equipment, though there are ongoing efforts to upgrade these facilities.
Bangladeshi universities typically rank outside the top 500 in QS and THE rankings. For
example, Dhaka University has ranked 554 in the QS ranking for the first time. Factors like
lower research output, fewer international faculty/students, and limited funding impact their
global rankings.
Universities like MIT, Stanford, Harvard, and Oxford have outstanding global reputations due to
groundbreaking research, renowned faculty, and a long history of academic excellence. These
schools attract top scholars and produce influential research that shapes industries worldwide.
The leading global universities produce a high volume of research cited worldwide, indicating
a strong research impact. They have extensive funding for research, allowing for cutting-edge
facilities and large-scale projects.
Top universities maintain low faculty-student ratios, often under 1:10, which allows for more
personalized instruction, smaller classes, and greater access to faculty.
These universities have a high percentage of international students and faculty, creating a
multicultural learning environment that attracts talent from all over the world. This also boosts
the universities' international reputation and rankings.
Universities like MIT and Stanford have strong ties with industries and receive substantial
funding from private sectors and alumni. This supports practical research, entrepreneurial
initiatives, and innovation.
Top universities invest heavily in infrastructure, with state-of-the-art labs, libraries, and
technology. Students and researchers have access to world-class facilities.
Universities like Oxford, Harvard, and MIT always stay on the top of these lists for a long time.
Summary:
Bangladeshi universities are strong in their local context and play a vital role in national
education and research. However, when compared to the QS and THE top 10 global universities,
they face limitations in research impact, resources, and international recognition. These rankings
highlight opportunities for Bangladeshi universities to improve in areas like research funding,
global collaborations, and infrastructure.
