PREPATION FOR MID TERM EXAM
SHEET 2

Exercise -1- (7pts) Characteristics of Nervous Impulse (20min)

A nerve is composed of bundles of nerve fibers .We isolate a
nerve fiber, and we subject it into increasing stimulations .The
recordings are shown below.

a. Name intensity I4,( / ) justify. ( / )

b. Show that the nerve fiber obeys the law of “All or

None”. ( )
1

c. Interpret the results obtained. ( )1

The skin contains special receptors sensitive to touch and pressure. Among these receptors are Pacinian
corpuscles .They are sensitive to hard pressure .We isolate one of these corpuscles and we place on its fibers
microelectrodes connected to a recording apparatus .Then we apply to it different intensities of pressure .The
recording is shown below .

d. Pick out the name of the receptor ( / ) and draw out its type( / ).

e. Represent the recording of doc-4 in a table showing the variation of the number action potential as
function of changing pressure. (1 / ) 1
2

f. Determine the coding modulation of the nervous message. ( ) 1

g. Predict the variation of the recording, if we increase the intensity of the stimulus. ( / )

Exercise -2-(5.5pts)
(20min)
The frog is an insectivore that feeds on insects as the cockroach. The frog tends to capture the cockroach, but in
45 % of the cases, the frog fails & the cockroach escapes.
To identify the nature of the stimulus that excites the cockroach to escape, we realize the following experiments:
Experiment 1: The frog is separated from the cockroach by a glass. The frog tries to capture it by projecting its
tongue & the cockroach ran away.
Experiment 2: We put beside the cockroach a tissue having the same odor of the frog. The cockroach didn’t
move.
Experiment 3: We
placed the cockroach
beside a fan that gives
powerful air. The
cockroach escapes
rapidly.

a. Pose the question problem. ( ) 1

b. Give the significance indicated by experiment.2. ( / ) 1

2

c. Deduce the stimuli that excite the cockroach. ( ) 2

d. Using your knowledge, compare the nervous system of the vertebrates to the invertebrates. (2)

Exercise -3- (7.5pts)

(20min)
The historical experiments of Walkin 1855 after those of Magendie in 1822 permit the progression of knowledge about the
nervous physiology. In order to verify their works concerning the importance of each root the following two experiments
Exp Section Immediate Consequences Delayed Observations
Loss of sensitivity & motor Degeneration of
activity in the region all nerve

innervated by the sectioned fibers in the
nerve peripheral end.
Loss of sensitivity in the Degeneration of nerve
region of the body fibers from both sides
2 innervated by the sectioned of sections & of the
nerve. dorsal part of the nerve

the P end.
b. Interpret the immediate
consequences of experiments 1 & 2. ( ) 2

c. Determine direction of the nervous message propagation at the ventral root. ( ) 1

d. Draw out the nature of each of the above mentioned roots. (1 / ) 1

2

e. Identify the location of the cell body of the neuron found in the dorsal root. ( ) 1

Exercise -4-(3.5pts) Alzheimer: Disease of the Century (15min)

Alzheimer's disease, the disease of the century, is a public health problem. It consists of brain disorders & and loss of
neurons that begin in the innermost region of the temporal lobe of the cerebrum which is involved in memory processing.
This disease appeared by Loss of short-term memory, behavioral modifications and loss of judgmental abilities and
reasoning.
Yet, little is known about the cause of the progressive destruction of neurons responsible for the loss of memory functions.
Several risk factors, including environmental and genetic factors are currently under study. 1-Pick out from the text:
i.The symptoms of the disease. ( / ) ii.The

region presenting the problem. ( / )1

2

2- Formulate the hypothesis tested regarding the cause of the Alzheimer. ( ) 1

An experiment was performed to determine the cause of

this disease: Different neurons were placed in three
media A, B and C, containing increasing concentrations
of Aluminum. We measured the % of damaged neurons;
the results are shown in the given histogram.
3- Identify the risk factor proved by the results of the
given document. (1 / )

Exercise -5- (3pts)
(10min)
In night birds: the Bombyx, the female attracts the male during the period of reproduction by emitting in the air a
volatile substance, the bombycol. When the male
detects this substance with its nose, it flies to the
female.

1- Extract from the text the role of bombycol. ( / )

1
2

2- Indicate the receptor and the effector organs of male Bombyx. ( )1

3- Make a simple drawing of the pathway of the nervous message in the male birds during its reaction by
mentioning the stimulus, receptor organ, effector organ, CNS, nervous pathways and response. (1 / ) 1
