II. Write the meanings of:


a) weed - unwanted plants

d) evil - immoral and wicked

III. Write the antonyms of:

b) pain x pleasure
c) healthy x unwell/ ill

IV. Answer the following questions:


1) Are habits good or bad according to the poet?
Ans: Habits can be good or bad depending on whether they make us blossom
like flowers or choke us like weeds.

2) What does the poet mean when he says, “A habit is a sticky thing”?
Ans: The poet means that like a sticky substance, we too get stuck with habits.

3) What do bad habits bring with them?


Ans: Bad habits bring pain, strife and suffering with them. They don’t allow us
to progress well in our lives.

GRAMMAR

Chapter- 17: Adverbs

Definition: An adverb is a word which modifies the meaning of a verb, an adjective


or another adverb.

Example 1 - Manu runs quickly.

: The adverb ‘quickly’ modifies the meaning of the verb ‘runs’.

Example 2 - This is a very sweet mango.

: The adverb ‘very’ modifies the meaning of the adjective ‘sweet’.

Example 3 - Maya reads quite loudly.

: The adverb ‘quite’ modifies the meaning of another adverb ‘loudly’.

KINDS OF ADVERBS

There are 6 kinds of adverbs

1. Adverb of manner

2. Adverb of place

3. Adverb of time

4. Adverb of number

5. Adverb of degree

6. Interrogative adverb

1. Adverb of manner

It tells how an action is done.

Example - The audience laughed loudly.

2. Adverb of place

It shows where or in which place the action is done.

Example - She searched for him everywhere.

3. Adverb of time

It shows when an action is done.

Example - We have to leave now.

4. Adverb of frequency/Adverb of number

It shows how often an action takes place.

Example - He is often late for work.

5. Adverb of degree

It shows how much or in what degree or to what extent an action is done.

Example - It was extremely hot last summer.

6. Interrogative Adverb

It is used to ask questions.

Example - Why are you sad?

Exercise I - Pick out the adverbs and state their kind.

1. Her dogs go everywhere with her.

everywhere - adverb of place

2. The soldiers fought bravely.

bravely - adverb of manner

3. My project work is almost completed.

almost - adverb of degree

4. When is your birthday?

when - interrogative adverb

5. I just finished my homework.

just - adverb of degree

6. I am going to buy a car tomorrow.

tomorrow – adverb of time

7. We should always speak the truth.

always - adverb of number.
