Building a People, Building a Nation ( Patricia Licuanan) The Strengths and

Weaknesses of the Filipino Character

The book "Building a People, Building a Nation" by Patricia Licuanan is a thought-provoking

work that focuses on the importance of moral recovery in nation-building. Licuanan emphasizes
that building a people and a nation requires eliminating weaknesses and developing strengths,
which begins with analyzing and understanding the Filipino character. The book highlights the
Strengths of the Filipino Character and Weaknesses of the Filipino Character.

Strengths of the Filipino Character

1. Pakikipagkapwa-Tao (Regard for Others):

o Filipinos are known for their deep sense of empathy, sensitivity, and care for
others. This trait emphasizes close social relationships, shared identity, and
collective responsibility. Filipinos often demonstrate kindness, generosity, and
hospitality in their everyday interactions.
2. Family Orientation:
o The family is central to Filipino life. This value promotes loyalty, support, and
care for family members, contributing to strong family ties. Filipinos view the
family as a source of emotional, moral, and even economic support.
3. Hard Work and Industry:
o The Filipino work ethic is characterized by diligence and perseverance. Filipinos
are hardworking, especially when it comes to supporting their families. Whether
in local jobs or as overseas workers, Filipinos are known for their dedication and
willingness to go the extra mile.
4. Faith and Religiosity:
o Religion plays a vital role in Filipino life, providing spiritual strength and moral
guidance. Faith is a source of hope and comfort, especially during times of
hardship. It also fosters a sense of community and shared values among Filipinos.
5. Bayanihan Spirit (Cooperation and Community Spirit):
o Filipinos value cooperation and collective action, as embodied in the bayanihan
spirit. This trait emphasizes helping others, especially in times of need, and
fosters a strong sense of solidarity within the community.

Weaknesses of the Filipino Character

1. Extreme Family-Centeredness:
o While family orientation is a strength, it can also be a weakness when it leads to
excessive loyalty to family over the larger community or nation. This can result in
nepotism, favoritism, and clannish behavior, where personal interests are prioritized
over the common good.

2. Lack of Discipline:
o Filipinos are sometimes seen as lacking discipline, especially in adhering to rules and
regulations. This can manifest as a disregard for punctuality, procrastination, or a
tendency to avoid responsibility. Such behavior can hinder productivity and contribute
to inefficiency in both personal and professional settings.

3. Kanya-Kanya Syndrome (Self-Centeredness):

o Filipinos sometimes exhibit the kanya-kanya attitude, where individual interests take
precedence over collective welfare. This self-centeredness can lead to a lack of
cooperation, rivalry, or even divisiveness within communities.

4. Lack of Self-Analysis and Reflection:

o Filipinos tend to avoid self-reflection or critical analysis of their behavior. This lack of
introspection can prevent individuals from recognizing personal or societal flaws that
need to be addressed for growth and improvement.

5. Too Much Emphasis on “Utang na Loob” (Debt of Gratitude):

o While utang na loob (debt of gratitude) is a valuable cultural trait, it can sometimes lead
to undue obligations or the perpetuation of unequal relationships. This can foster
corruption or exploitation, as individuals feel pressured to repay favors, even when it
conflicts with fairness or justice.

Conclusion

Patricia Licuanan’s work emphasizes that building a strong Filipino nation requires an
understanding of both the strengths and weaknesses of the Filipino character. While traits such as
family orientation, communal cooperation, and resilience are commendable, weaknesses like
passivity, lack of discipline, and colonial mentality need to be addressed. By recognizing and
working on these areas, Filipinos can strive for personal development, contributing to the larger
goal of national progress and unity.
