DETAILED LESSON PLAN FOR GRADE 8

Visual Arts

Length of Period: 60 minutes Time: 12pm- 12:15 pm

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
 determine the different traditional Asian arts (hand puppets and shadow plays)
 valuing the importance and benefits of puppetry and puppet play.
 designs and create puppets or shadow play props in collaboration with other disciplines.

II. SUBJECT MATTER


Topic: Understanding Traditional Arts in Asia by Using Symbols in Puppetry

an activity called “IKAW ay AKO, AKO ay IKAW” do

INSTRUCTION
The class will be grouped into 2 teams where the members
will coordinate and choose 2 representatives each. The
representative will listen to the random 5 actions that their
classmates will pull on the bag of mystery and act it. (The students will listen and cooperate)

Example: Raise your right hand

The representative will raise their right hand with a delay


with their partner. The person on the back will do the
action first and then the person Infront will follow.

game.

discussion of our lesson.”

“Today, we are going to talk about Asian Puppetry.”

ASIAN PUPPETRY
: The art of puppetry is an ancient tradition believed to
date back more than 3,000 years.

In some places, modern variations have developed


using the materials and technology of today. However,
many countries have their own unique version of (The students will read the power point
puppetry which is still practiced today in traditional presentation)
form.

Below are the different Asian Countries and their


puppet traditions

WAYANG KULIT of Indonesia

Look at the picture above. It’s an example of Shadow


puppetry famous in Indonesia called Wayang Kulit.
Wayang puppets originated on the island of Java
around the 11th century, adopted from India. It
developed to the form we see today, and then spreaded
through to other islands. The word wayang means
puppet and also the theatre, both with or without
puppets.

There are two forms: wayang kulit, made of flat


leather pierced with decorative holes, and wayang
golek, three dimensional wooden puppets.

Water Puppets of Vietnam

(The students will read the power point


presentation)

In Vietnam, they have water puppets called roi nuoc,


which means 'puppets that dance on water’; it is an
ancient art that dates back to the 11th century in the
Red River Delta. This art form is unique to North
Vietnam, and in recent years became known outside
Vietnam.

Japan Bunraku puppet

Bunraku puppet is a type of wood-carved puppet


originally made to stand out through torch
illumination. Developed in Japan over a thousand
years ago it is formalized and combined with shamisen (The students will read the power point
music at the end of the 16th century, the puppeteers presentation)
dress to remain neutral against a black background,
although their presence as a kind of 'shadow' figure
adds a mysterious power to the puppet.

Thailand Nang and Hun

Puppetry is an ancient art form in Thailand in the form


of nang (shadow puppet plays) and hun (puppet plays
with doll-like puppets). The ancient stories always
have a moral lesson of good versus evil, of reward and
punishment, but later the stories included folk tales of

adventures, heroes, romance, of lost children finding

their way home. The word 'nang' means projected
image. A Nang theatre group usually has up to ten
puppeteers and musicians.

Philippine Puppetry:

Puppetry in the Philippines did not exist until the late


19th century; the closest thing the Philippines had was
in the form of shadow play performances called carillo
or small cart, the higante (giant), and film actor-
director Manuel Conde’s introduction of ventriloquism
in the 1940s, but the Philippines itself did not have its
own culture or history of puppetry.

Importance of Puppetry

 Puppetry plays an important role in


disseminating knowledge in most parts
of the world.
 Puppetry imbibes elements of all art
forms such as literature, painting,
sculpture, music, dance, and drama
while enabling students to develop their
creative abilities.
 Puppetry occurs in almost all human
societies where puppets are used for the
purpose of entertainment through
performance, as sacred objects in rituals,
as symbolic effigies in celebrations such
as carnivals, and as a catalyst for social
and psychological change in
transformative arts.

Benefits of Puppet-Play
 Stimulates imagination and creativity.
 Develops emotion.
 Improves motor skills.
 Learns etiquette.
 Boosts confidence in speaking and
reading.
 Increases group participation.

E. APPLICATION

“If you don’t have any question, and to see if you
really understand our topic. This is your activity for
today.
Here is your Instruction.

Instruction:
“For 20 minutes you will create your puppet
imitating yourself.”
(The student will participate)
Materials:

 Cardboard: For the puppet's body and head.


 Colored Paper: To decorate the puppet.
 BBQ Sticks: To use as handles.
 Glue: For assembling parts.
 Scissors: For cutting shapes.
 Markers or Paint: For additional decoration.

Procedures:
1. Design Your Puppet
2. Create the Body of your puppet cut a
rectangular piece of cardboard for the body
3. For the arms, cut out two smaller rectangles
(about 2 inches wide and 6 inches long).
4. Make the Head use colored paper to create
facial features like eyes, a nose, and a mouth.
Glue these onto the head.
5. Assemble the Puppet: Glue the head to the top
of the body.
6. Attach the arms to the sides of the body using
glue.
7. Take one BBQ stick and glue it to the bottom
of the puppet's body. This will be your
handle.
8. If you want the arms to move, you can attach
them using paper fasteners (split pins) instead
of glue, allowing for movement.
9. Decorate Your Puppet
