Lesson 2:
ETHICS AND RESPONSIBILITY IN COMPUTING

NOVA DIVINE M. DE LA PENA

Responsibility on the Net
* The internet has made it possible for us to connect with each other in
meaningful ways. It has changed how many of us live, work and play.
Unfortunately, its power can also be used to spread lies and hate.

Unlocking the power of the internet is an awesome responsibility. In

exchange for the keys to cyberspace, netizens or cybernetizens have to
fulfill certain responsibilities. They should use good manners. They
should respect laws, including the rules of their school and the rules
their parents make. They should keep in mind that everyone has to help
take care of the Internet.

NOVA DIVINE M. DE LA PENA

What is Netiquette?
Netiquette is a contraction of the words Internet and etiquette. It refers to the proper
behavior to be observed in cyberspace.

Example or Rules of netiquettes:
There are ten (10) rules that we have to remember when dealing
with people online. Dividing the rules into three (3) sections will
make it easier for us to remember the basic rules.
1. Cyber manners : We already know the dangers brought by the
effects of cyberbullying. To avoid this, we must do our share for us
not to start a fight with another person online.
a) Be Polite – (If we do not want to be bully, we have to be polite to
others as well.)

b) Think before we write or type – (The send button is
always easy to click; but once we click it, we cannot undo
it. We have to think of what we want to say before we
even type it into our computers)
c) Behave online just like how we would behave in real life.
– As a general rule, whatever manners or values our
parents and teachers have taught us, we must apply them
online. Be kind to others with our words and thoughts,
and we will avoid any danger online.)

2. Cyber Smarts : Kindness is one aspect of netiquette, but being
smart about using the Internet is also another aspect.
a) Never give out or post personal information – (Everything about
us and our family should be ours alone. Do not post about it.)
b) Do not do anything uncomfortable – (If people ask us to post or
share stuff online and we are not okay with it, do not hesitate to
say NO.)
c) Only visit safe websites.

2. Cyber Communications : The rules below are all about
communicating online. What should we put in our
messages? How should we talk with other people?
Communication is also a key to avoid cyberbullying.
a) Do not talk to strangers
b) Keep messages short – (Longer messages are better
delivered personally in a formal setting. When
communicating online, always make sure that our
thoughts are complete but written in a short manner.)
c) Use emoticons for the proper emotion, but use them
moderately.

NOVA DIVINE M. DE LA PENA

Emoticons (Emotion icons) – are a combination of keyboard
characters used to display emotion. Since people do not see
how we feel as we are behind our computers, we may do so
by typing in an emotion. However, we should use them
sparingly. DO not use emoticons for every line of our
messages.
d) Do not use ALL CAPS – Using ALL CAPS (or capital letters)
is equivalent to shouting at another person is rude. WE
should not practice it.

Subject: crap

I’m so sick and tired of all the crap that goes on in our
classroom. Judy is the most annoying person I’ve ever known.
As my groupmate, she hardly ever gets her assigned work
done, and I’m tired of watching her do nothing. And then my
teacher acts like there isn’t any problem. I am SO CLOSE TO
REPORTING HER TO THE DEAN! She certainly plays
favorites!!!!!!!!!!!!!
