PROBLEMS

1. (25 pts) The motion of a parachutist can be modeled using a differential equation derived from Newton's
second law of motion applied to the parachutist:

𝑚𝑣 = 𝑚𝑔 − 𝑘𝑣

where m is the mass of the parachutist, g is the acceleration due to gravity in m/s2, k is proportionality
constant for air resistance and 𝑣(𝑡) is the velocity of the parachutist at time t.

(a) Determine the order of this differential equation and also determine whether it is linear or nonlinear.
(b) Find the solution with the given initial condition 𝑣(0) = 𝑣 .
(c) Assuming the parachute opens when v=9 m/s, find the terminal velocity for m=1.5 kg and k=1
kg/m.
(d) Plot 𝑣(𝑡) solutions for three different values of mass m1=1 kg, m2=10 kg, m3=25 kg and k=5 kg/m.

2. (25 pts) Find the general solution of the following equation:

𝑦
+ 1 = 2𝑦
(𝑦 − 1)

3. (25 pts) Check whether the given differential equation is an exact differential equation. If not, work out
the general solution using the integrating factor 𝜇(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥𝑦.

2𝑥 cos(𝑥) 𝑦 − 𝑥𝑦 sin(𝑥) = −2𝑦 cos(𝑥)

4. (25 pts) Solve the given initial value problem for 𝑦(𝜋⁄4) = 3√2 and plot the solution for the interval
0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 𝜋/2.

cos(𝑥) ∙ 𝑦 = − sin(𝑥) ∙ 𝑦 + 2 cos (𝑥) sin(𝑥) − 1
