Microsoft Intune Limitations vs.

Jamf
While positioned as a ‘free’ alternative as part of a paid Microsoft 365 package,
several of our commercial customers have reported signi cant blockers with
using their Apple devices when Microsoft Intune is used to manage them
compared to a Jamf solution. The below table illustrates the feature di erences
that cause these blockers:

Full day-of-release OS support Late to o er latest OS support

Apple TV management support No Apple TV management support

Deploy user-level DMGs to Macs Limited support for user-level DMGs

Mac-speci c Device Compliance

Generic Device Compliance evaluation
considerations and evaluation

Smart Group support for quick No support for Smart Groups, making
changes to speci c iPads (e.g. class timely changes far slower to
sets) implement

Full scripting functionality on Macs Very limited options for Mac scripting,
limiting management options
Full support for Jamf Protect and Jamf
No native support for these products,
Connect to best secure your devices,
adding delays and extra work to secure
your network and user data from
devices, data, your network from threats
threats

Self Service app for user installation No support, leading to less exibility and
of apps and settings as convenient convenience in content delivery to devices

Given the signi cance of the above limitations from both usability and security
standpoints, Intune should be seen as a false economy as it detracts from the
large investment that customers have made into Apple hardware by increasing
management complexity and, ultimately, o ering a poorer end-user experience
all-round.
