Friction-grip bolts
Friction-grip bolts are made from high-strength steel so they can be tightened
to give a high shank tension. The shear in the connected plates is transmitted by
friction as shown in figure 1. These bolts are used where strong joints are required,
and a major use is in the joint in rigid frames.
The bolts must be used with hardness steel washers to prevent damage to connected
parts.

Table (1): load capacities for friction bolts used in 43 steel plates.
Example1:
Design the bolts for moment and shear connection between floor beam and column
in a steel frame building. The following data are given:
Floor beam 610× 229 UB 140
Column 254× 254 UC132
Moment Dead load = 180 KN.m
Imposed load =100KN.m
Shear Dead load =300KN
Imposed load =160KN

Figure 2: beam to column connection
Solution:
The moment is taken by flange bolts in tension:
Factored moment=(1.4×180)+( 1.6×100)=412KN.m
Flange force =412⁄0.594 =693.6KN
Provide 24-mm diameter friction-grip bolts
Minimum shank tension =207KN
Tension capacity of four bolts = 4× 0.9 × 207=745.2KN > 693KN
The joint is satisfactory for moment
Shear connection:
The shear is resistance by web bolts:
Factored shear ==(1.4×300)+( 1.6×160)=676 KN
Slip resistance of eight No. 24 mm diameter bolts in clearance
Holes=8× 1.1 × 0.45 × 207 =819.7KN
4
If the end plate is 12 mm thick, the bearing resistance
=8× 825 × 24 × 12 × 10 =1901KN
If the end distance of the two top bolts is 55mm the bearing resistance must not
exceed.
=6×825× 24 × 12 × 10 + 2 × 1⁄3 × 55 × 12 × 825 × 10
=`788.6KN
Therefore 24-mm dimeter bolts are satisfactory.
