Computer Graphics Programming MIDTERM PROJECT

Isometric 3D Bedroom

Students will create a 3D isometric model of a bedroom using Blender, focusing on

basic modeling techniques, texturing, and lighting.

Research & Inspiration

● Look up isometric art styles and gather reference images of various

bedrooms. Consider color schemes, furniture styles, and overall layout.

Planning the Layout

● Sketch a rough layout of your bedroom, considering the isometric

perspective. Ensure that all furniture and decorations fit well within the space.
Think about:
○ Bed placement
○ Storage (wardrobe, drawers)
○ Desks, chairs, or other furniture
○ Accessories (lamps, books, plants)

Modeling the Bedroom

● Basic Shapes: Start by creating the basic shapes of the room using cubes and
planes for walls and flooring.
● Furniture: Model key furniture pieces:
○ Bed (consider a simple bed frame and mattress)
○ Wardrobe or closet
○ Desk and chair
○ Any additional items (shelves, rugs)
● Details: Add smaller details like pillows, books, or picture frames to enhance
the realism.

Texturing

● Use UV mapping to create textures for your furniture and walls. Experiment
with:
○ Wood textures for furniture
○ Fabric textures for bed linens
○ Wallpaper or paint for the walls
● Apply colors and materials to give your bedroom a cohesive look.

Lighting

● Set up a light source to mimic natural light (e.g., a sun lamp or an area light).
● Consider adding additional lights for lamps or overhead fixtures to create a
cozy atmosphere.
● Experiment with light intensity and shadows.

Rendering

● Set up the camera to capture the isometric view.

● Adjust the render settings for quality.
● Set the Resolution 1000x1000 pixels
● Render your scene and save the output in a suitable format (PNG or JPEG).

Documentation

● Write a Narrative Report explaining your design choices, modeling

techniques, and challenges faced during the project.
● Include screenshots of your work at different stages (layout, modeling,
texturing, final render).

Modeling Process

1. Scene Layout: The isometric view was established by setting the camera at
a 45-degree angle, ensuring all elements would be visible without distortion.
2. Asset Creation:
○ Bed: Modeled using simple geometric shapes, detailed with a duvet
and pillows created using cloth simulation.
○ Nightstands and Dresser: Designed with a focus on clean lines and
minimalism, utilizing the extrude and bevel tools to create realistic
wood textures.
○ Workspace: Included a desk and chair, modeled with attention to
ergonomic design. The desk features a laptop and stationery for
added realism.
○ Decorative Elements: Items like plants, books, and wall art were
added to provide personality and warmth to the space.
3. Texturing and Materials:
○ Used Blender’s Shader Editor to create realistic materials, including
wood, fabric, and metal.
○ Texture maps were applied to enhance details, and image textures
were used for wall art and bedding.
4. Lighting:
○ A three-point lighting setup was used to create depth and highlight
textures.
○ Soft, warm light was simulated using area lights to mimic natural
daylight streaming through a window.

Challenges Encountered

● Proportions: Maintaining correct proportions while ensuring the isometric

perspective was visually appealing required several adjustments.
● Cloth Simulation: The duvet and pillows initially lacked realism; further
tweaking of simulation settings helped achieve a more natural look.
● Rendering Time: The final render took longer than anticipated due to the
complexity of textures and lighting. Optimizing render settings improved
efficiency.

Evaluation Criteria:

● Creativity and originality of the design.

● Quality of modeling (geometry, proportions).
● Effectiveness of texturing and material application.
● Lighting and overall atmosphere.
● Clarity of Documentation and explanation of the work process.
