Activity 2 The Scientific Method

Introduction
Scientists look and investigate for the possible answer through an organized and logical
procedure referred to as the scientific method.

Scientific method is an organized, step-by-step procedure in solving a scientific

problem. The scientific method establishes facts based on observations or raised questions.
There are six steps involved in a scientific method: (1) observation; (2) identifying a problem; (3)
formulating Hypothesis; (4) experimentation; (5) collecting and analyzing data; and (6) drawing
conclusion.

In this activity, you will apply the steps in scientific method based on your own
observations.

Objective
Apply the steps in scientific method in certain problem

Materials
 Yeast  Bleach
 Sugar  Petri dish
 Hot water  Beaker

Procedure
1. For the first set-up, put the yeast and sugar in hot water. Observe what happens.
Take note of the reaction of the yeast and sugar to hot water.
2. For the second set-up, add sugar to warm water but yeast will not be added.
Observe what happens. Take note of the reaction of the sugar to warm water.
3. For the third set-up, add yeast to hot water and put some bleach. Observe what will
happen. Take note of the reaction of the yeast when bleach is added to sugar.

2. State the possible hypothesis on the following situation:

Yeast and sugar Sugar into hot water Yeast added to hot
added to hot water with no yeast water and bleach

3. How did you test your hypothesis?
