E-learning

How to benefit from it and

develop it

What’s e-learning?
E-Learning (e-learning, electronic learning) is a type of
online education, training, and knowledge sharing that is
conducted over the Internet. It can be utilized in various
settings, such as academic education, corporate training,
continuing professional development, and skill development
courses.

1
E-learning
W hat is the difference between
eLearning and traditional learning?

E-learning and traditional classroom learning both have their

advantages and disadvantages. While traditional classroom learning

offers face-to-face interaction with teachers and peers, eLearning

provides flexibility and convenience for learners. It ultimately depends

on the individual's preferences and needs when it comes to choosing

between the two.

However, in today's digital age, incorporating elements of both methods

can result in a well-rounded educational experience that caters to all

types of learners.

The growth of eLearning has been facilitated by the widespread adoption

of computers and internet technology and was further accelerated by the

COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a surge in demand for online learning

solutions.

Benefits of eLearning for Businesses
Many companies, from large enterprises to small startups, use
eLearning to manage their employees’ training and development:
upgrade their qualifications, teach them new knowledge and new
skills, or retrain them for new positions. By seamlessly integrating
traditional learning methods (such as in-person classes) and
training sessions with digital tools, many companies implement
blended learning.

Online learning is expanding the reach of education and empowering

more people than ever before to work toward their personal goals.
Let’s go over some of the major benefits of online learning.

1. You don’t have to relocate

or commute.
2. You can decide your
learning space.
3. You can keep working
while enrolled.
4. You can build on skills you
already have—or learn
something entirely new.
5. You can learn from top
universities or industry-
leading companies.
6. Your schedule tends to be
flexible and you can learn
at your own pace.

E-learning
E-learning methods :

1. Web eLearning
Web eLearning is based on website
content. Employees can access this
website from their personal devices
or through the company’s internet.
Websites provide employees with the
flexibility to learn as and when they
can or want to. It does not limit
learning to a particular space and
allows users to access the
information whenever they wish to
do so. A website also gives the
flexibility to add multimedia, such as
text, videos, images, and more. This adds a new dimension to eLearning and
makes it more interactive and engaging for the employees. It also familiarizes
employees with web-based tools so they can get acquainted with modes of
internal communication at your company.

2. Virtual Classrooms
Virtual classrooms are basically the modern version of an instructor-led corporate
training session. This allows both instructors and attendees to be involved in the
process. Instructors are present in the classroom with the help of video software
while attendees are present physically. This can also be done remotely via
conferencing software. This eLearning
model encourages collaboration,
ideation, and engagement, helping to
create an environment for personal
connections. The ‘presence’ of an expert
allows back-and-forth questioning, a
live learning experience, and a human
element that other modes lack.

3. Video Modules
Video modules are produced by learning videos that have been made in advance
for the reference of the employees. These modules can be animated or with a
human instructor. The opportunities are endless when it comes to creating videos

4
E-learning
for a corporate training program. This is also a highly flexible mode of eLearning,
as the videos can be accessed by users anytime they want. They also have the
ability to play the videos as many times as they wish. When it comes to grasping
a concept, videos often perform much better than text because humans love
graphic-based delivery. The colors, seamless explanation and video format make
eLearning easier for the employees.

4. Specialized eLearning
Every organization has different corporate training
needs and every employee or group of employees
has different needs when it comes to their
corporate training. In such scenarios, mass-
produced and general corporate training modules
just don’t cut it. With custom eLearning
development, there is the flexibility of having the
ability to choose and customize corporate training
programs. With eLearning, employers can
establish a personal connection with their
employees as they are able to accurately fulfill
their needs and not have them learn something
that they might either already know or have no need to learn.

5. Social Media Training

The world has gone social and employers are just catching up, especially when it
comes to corporate training. This eLearning model creates a collaborative
environment for the employees and taps into the
power of social media. Through a platform
like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, this program
delivers the required knowledge and does so in a
cohesive way that encourages teamwork and
collaboration. If social media is a key part of your
company, this will improve employees’ familiarity
with important methods of internal and external
communication.

6. Microlearning
Microlearning refers to the delivery of eLearning content in the form of
information nuggets. Most microlearning modules will be 1, 3, or 5 minutes long.
You can have the occasional module that is 10 to 15 minutes long but these are
only ideal if dividing the module into two would interrupt the learning.

5
E-learning
Microlearning can take nearly any form. It can be a short video, a short piece of
written content, or anything else.

7. Mobile Learning
When it comes to eLearning, accessibility plays a crucial role. What better way to
stay accessible than to go the mobile route? Through mobile eLearning,
employees have access to the needed information in the comfort of their homes
or even during the train ride to work. Mobile learning puts corporate training right
into the palms of the employees, thus allowing them the freedom to refer to it as
and when they wish.

8. AR and VR Learning
You can also have augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) learning.
Augmented reality is the real world with something virtual added on top.
Pokémon Go is an excellent example, as you can use your camera to see the real
world and Pokémon.

People’s opinion in e-learning :-

We conducted a survey in which we asked a sample of people if they like to

learn online or not, and here’s the results :

6
E-learning
About 54% chose traditional learning over online and
when we asked them why about 90% of them said that
they like the interaction which they miss in online
learning. But in the other hand they said that online
learning is saving more time for them and it’s a lot
easier so if we could overcome the interaction-problem
we can gain almost all the advantages of online
learning.

We also asked them about their thoughts to develop online learning and that’s
what they said :

• Faster internet should be provided.

• Tablets or laptops should be given to students to help financially.
• Timing should be studied.
• Classifying students.
• Increasing interaction.
• Collecting feedbacks.

As we can see almost all the problems is solvable but the question here,
Is online learning suitable for dentistry?!

In our college in (October 6 university) we can say that it’s a 50% online
learning since we get our lectures as PowerPoint slides and word-office and in
some cases we use recorded videos and other ways.

Our lecturers send us news, feedbacks and lectures in

Microsoft Teams which is one of the most well known
application in online learning
.
In COVID-19 era, students didn’t have any problem in online learning and the
professors helped them in that by sending videos and contacting with students
through email.

We asked students in our college that studied in online

(in COVID-19) and are still studying now in the normal
way, they said that they see no difference between them
and online might be better since you can save time and
other things.

7
E-learning
Nowadays, we stopped using traditional ways of learning like using
microscopes in sections and started using computers to see cells and other
thing, even in anatomy there’re 3D models in applications on computers and
mobile phones which help and facilitate collecting informations.

With the social dissemination of information and communication technologies

(ICT), the growth of Internet users, and the fast evolution of a wide variety of
mobile electronic devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets, and laptop computers),
the concept of e-learning has gained substantial recognition in dentistry, even
though it has been around since the
early 1990s. It has been discussed
that the traditional e-learning
platforms, despite their large
diffusion and consolidation, need to
widen the range of possibilities
required by the users, and be
comprised of a complex electronic
ecosystem focused on the
teaching/learning symbiosis and
knowledge management, both, at
an institutional and a personal
level.

E-learning includes a variety of modalities and terms such as online learning,

mobile learning, blended learning, computer assisted instruction, distance
learning, e-teaching, mediated learning, simulation-based learning, and virtual
learning, each one of these having their own operative differences but all part
of the digital learning ecosystem. However, independent of the modalities, e-
learning is built on three key elements: the various pedagogical models, the
instructional and learning strategies, and the pedagogical tools or online
learning technologies .

According to a recent systematic review, some barriers or challenges reported

for implementing e-learning strategies in health sciences education are (i)
poor motivation and/or expectation: from the learners caused by internal
factors (e.g., poor engagement, high levels of anxiety and stress, lack of
student’s self-discipline) and external factors (course structure, poor
pedagogical design, management policy, limited use of technology in
8
E-learning
education, lack of support); (ii) resource-intensive: time-, cost- and labor-
intensive approach of e-learning programs; (iii) no suitability for all
disciplines/contents: for contents with the need for practical or demonstrative
activities, where e-learning is hard or nearly impossible to implement; (iv)
lack of IT skills: especially untrained persons in computer skills. Dental
education faces all the listed challenges for the complexity and variety of
courses that are required. However, the biggest unresolved challenge is to
analyze and commonly agree on the ideal evaluation tools necessary for each
discipline and teaching method. A thorough cultural transformation in the
education system, following standardization, validation, and equivalence
testing, is necessary to ensure an appropriate blended curriculum of traditional
face- to-face teaching and e-learning.

Literature points out some enablers for implementing e-learning strategies in

DS courses, such as (i) facilitate learning: a more integrated and
contextualized learning may develop an optimal interaction between students
and teachers; (ii) learning in practice: an effective approach for transferring
clinical skills and knowledge using virtual clinical case studies, adopting a
mixed learning approach, and combining distinct styles and modalities; (iii)
systematic approach to learning: moving from simple to complex concepts,
logically interconnecting knowledge and ideas for more consolidated learning;
and (iv) integration of e-learning into curricula: combining face-to- face
classroom experiences with online learning to stimulate independent,
interactive, and collaborative learning with a flexible and technologically rich
format.

In our opinion, in the present time e-learning can’t be reliable alone in

dentistry, but we can merge between online and traditional learning so we can
take the benefits of the two.

9
E-learning
If we are going to use e-learning (even as a supplying way), we have to know
the most prominent international sites providing e-learning :

1. Academic earth
2. Alison learning paths
3. BetterExplained
4. Canvas network
5. Edx
6. Codecademy
7. FutureLearn
8. Coursera
9. HTML Dog
10. Udemy

Designing the e-learning methodology in dental education system by using

education technology social learning app provided by the organizations
improved the overall knowledge and retention capacity of the examination
going students and also helped in keeping the up-to-date knowledge on dental
health-related updates.

The probable prospective of e-learning could be innovative or revolutionary

because this helps in both theoretical-related and clinical-related
advancements, and it is possible only with e-learning in developing countries
to meet the quality in education.

In the end, we think the most important question is :

Will e-learning sweep the world in the future..?
