The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Workplace: Opportunities and

Challenges

Good afternoon, Teacher Italia Vergara, Managing Director of American

English Overseas Center, teachers, students, and special guests. My name is
Adrian Diaz, I am a Level 6 student, and today I am delivering my final
conference about The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Workplace:
Opportunities and Challenges .

During this presentation, I will cover three main points: What AI is and where it
came from, the evolution and applications of AI in recent years, and finally,
the impact of AI on the workplace today.

To start off with my conference, I want to delve into the first point:
Understanding Artificial Intelligence – What is AI and Where Did it Come
From? Artificial Intelligence, or AI, refers to machines that mimic human
intelligence, such as learning, decision-making, and problem-solving. While
the concept of AI has existed for centuries, modern AI began in the 1950s.
British mathematician Alan Turing, often called the father of AI, proposed that
machines could “think” and introduced the Turing Test to evaluate whether a
machine’s behavior could be indistinguishable from that of a human.

In 1956, the Dartmouth Conference officially coined the term Artificial

Intelligence , marking the beginning of AI as a formal field of study. Early AI
systems were basic, solving problems like playing checkers, but progress was
slow due to limited computing power. This led to what is known as the "AI
Winter," a period when interest and funding in AI research declined. However,
advancements eventually resumed, driven by the development of Machine
Learning and Deep Learning, which allowed AI systems to learn and adapt
over time. A significant milestone was AlphaGo, an AI that defeated a world
champion in the game of Go by analyzing millions of games and learning
strategies.

The Second Point of My Conference is The Evolution and Applications of AI in

Recent Years. Over the last few decades, AI has evolved dramatically,
primarily through advancements in Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
These technologies have pushed the boundaries of what AI can achieve.

Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of AI that allows systems to learn from

data without being explicitly programmed. Unlike traditional programming,
where rules are hardcoded, Machine Learning models analyze large datasets
to identify patterns and make predictions. For example, spam filters in email
services use Machine Learning to recognize which messages are likely spam
based on keywords, sender information, and historical data. ML has
revolutionized industries by making systems more adaptive and capable of
improving over time.
Deep Learning (DL), a more advanced subset of Machine Learning, mimics
the structure of the human brain using artificial neural networks. These
networks consist of layers of interconnected nodes, much like neurons in our
brains, that process information in complex ways. Deep Learning enables
systems to understand highly intricate data patterns, which is why it powers
technologies like facial recognition, voice assistants, and even self-driving
cars. For instance, a Deep Learning model for facial recognition learns to
distinguish features such as eye shape or skin texture by analyzing millions of
images, allowing it to identify individuals with remarkable accuracy.
The combination of Machine Learning and Deep Learning has transformed AI
from basic task automation to advanced problem-solving. ML excels in tasks
like predicting outcomes based on data, while DL shines in processing
unstructured information such as images, videos, and natural language.
Together, these technologies form the backbone of many modern AI
applications, enabling them to perform tasks once thought to be purely the
domain of human intelligence.

One remarkable example is ChatGPT, a conversational AI capable of

generating human-like text, answering questions, and assisting with tasks like
writing and research. Another is DALL·E, an AI tool that creates unique
images based on text descriptions, revolutionizing creative industries like
design and marketing. In healthcare, AI has proven to be a game-changer,
helping doctors diagnose diseases more accurately by analyzing medical
images and personalizing treatments. In finance, AI detects fraudulent
transactions and provides valuable insights for better decision-making.
Everyday platforms like Netflix and Spotify rely on AI to recommend movies,
shows, and songs tailored to our preferences, while e-commerce giants like
Amazon use AI to enhance the shopping experience.

AI is also leading advancements in emerging fields. Autonomous vehicles,

powered by AI, aim to improve transportation safety. In agriculture, AI helps
farmers monitor crop health and optimize irrigation systems. It is also being
used to model climate change impacts, promote sustainability, and
personalize education through tools like virtual tutors and automated grading
systems.

These advancements demonstrate AI's incredible versatility and potential to

solve real-world problems.

The Third Point of My Conference is The Impact of AI on the Workplace:

Current and Future Effects. AI is transforming industries, redefining roles, and
reshaping how we work. By automating repetitive tasks, AI allows employees
to focus on more creative and strategic work. For instance, AI chatbots handle
routine customer inquiries, freeing human agents to resolve complex
problems. In manufacturing, robots powered by AI assemble products with
precision, while human workers oversee and improve processes.

Contrary to fears that AI will eliminate jobs, it is actually creating new

opportunities. Studies predict that by 2030, AI could generate up to 50 million
new jobs globally. These roles span industries such as healthcare, where
analysts and developers are creating AI systems to improve patient care;
technology, where data scientists and AI trainers are in high demand; and
management, where new positions are emerging to oversee collaboration
between human teams and AI systems. These roles require a combination of
technical knowledge and soft skills, such as creativity and adaptability.

That said, the potential of AI comes with challenges. Some roles, particularly
those involving repetitive tasks, may become obsolete, highlighting the
importance of upskilling and lifelong learning. Ethical concerns, such as bias
in AI systems and privacy issues, also need to be addressed. Additionally,
while AI boosts productivity and economic growth, it risks widening wealth
gaps if access to AI tools and training is not equitable.

In Panama, AI offers immense potential. Imagine AI helping farmers optimize

crop yields, improving logistics at the Panama Canal, or personalizing
education to support every child’s needs. These opportunities are within reach
if we choose to adapt and learn.

To conclude, AI is not just a technology—it is a transformative tool with the

power to redefine how we work, live, and connect with one another. The
decisions we make today will shape the future of AI in our workplaces and
communities. Will we use it to create opportunities and enhance lives, or will
we allow it to deepen inequalities? This choice lies with us.

AI is not here to replace us but to work with us. By staying curious, embracing
change, and using AI responsibly, we can create a brighter and more
inclusive future for Panama and the world.
Thank you very much for listening, and I will be happy to answer any
questions.
