MBR2 - Example Individual Research Proposal

This example would obtain a fail grade (approx. a grade of 25-30%) and this example is therefore to
illustrate that this topic, whilst an interesting one, is far too broad and needs considerable narrowing
and focus. A more critical approach to understanding the gig economy is also needed. One approach,
for example, could be to consider the perspective of workers in a particular sector or organisation
that is associated with the gig economy in a specific geographical region. Additionally, in terms of
data collection, this example outlines secondary research, but does not offer specifics on what data
will be used or where the sources will be obtained from, and why. Unfortunately this section is far
too vague and instead needed to outline what specific data sets will be used, where this will be
obtained from, why this source in particular, how this source helps to address the specific research
question and objectives.

1. Title: Determining the contribution of the gig economy to developing countries

2. Rationale:
The research mainly aims at understanding the contribution of the gig economy in the
development of developing countries. Gig-economy, as well as platform work, has
become the most popular topic while reshaping the experiences of different work for an
increasingly larger group of people. On the other hand, it is also evident that the gig
economy lacks empirical insights. Hence, the research will introduce readers to the
emerging dynamics of the gig economy in developing country.

The gig economy can be defined as the international market, which is free. In this market,
several companies can set their short-term plan based on market demands. Many
independent workers who are known as contractors can also set their short-term plan. It
helps to create a skill-based, flexible relationship. Many online platforms are also allowing
freelancers to portray their skills. Besides it, the concept of gig economy allows the
companies and the individual workers to use the skills for completing the short-term
program (Gandini, 2019). The gig economy is very useful for the development of
developing countries. It helps boost up the economies of the developing countries.
Many developing countries such as Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore and other such
developing countries are now focusing on the gig-economy to make development in
their economies

The governments of the developing countries are seeing the gig economy as a golden
opportunity for their economy. Thus, they are providing part-time jobs to the
unemployed citizens of their countries. The jobs they providing are flexible, and it
helps to increase the economy of such countries. The governments arrange several
programs on entrepreneurship and providing several training to their citizens. For
example, the “Singapore workforce development Agency” taking initiatives to help
freelancers to find part-time jobs according to their skills. With the emergence of Gig-
economy, the nature of works has changed globally, specifically in developing countries
(Graham et al. 2017). With the help of the latest technologies, developing countries

1
such as Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore and other such countries are providing several
flexible work opportunities to their citizens.

2.1 Research Aim and Objectives

The research aims at understanding the contribution of the gig economy to the
development of developing countries.
The research objectives that have been estimated are:
1. To evaluate the significant understanding of the role of the gig economy in
the labour market
2. To analyse the impact that is associated with the digital gig economy in
developing countries
3. To determine the job quality in terms of remote gig work across the developing
countries context

3. Methodology
In order to conduct the research paper significantly, there are certain methods and
procedures that are necessary to be considered. Therefore, some of the research
methods that are going to be conducted are discussed in this section.
Research approach is referred to as the guiding principle that enables to plan and address
the research procedures. It further consists of wider assumptions for the significant
data collection procedures analysis as well as interpreting the data. There are mainly
two different types of research approaches such as deductive research approach and
inductive research approach. In case of deductive research approaches, it is mainly
concerned with developing research hypotheses based on the existing knowledge about
the gig economy (Mohajan, 2018). On the other hand, the inductive research approach
helps to promote the research work with the help of a broader study area that includes
relevant observation and theories. Therefore, the research approach that will be
adopted by the research is the deductive research approach. It is the most suitable
method as it emphasizes estimating the contribution of the gig economy in developing
countries”. This ensures that there is no scope for “developing any theory based on the
research topic (Ragab and Arisha, 2018).

3.1 Data Collection – secondary data

Data collection procedure is referred to as the most significant segment in the
research methodology. It helps to understand the way the data is going to be collected for
the completion of the research paper. There are mainly two different types of data
collection procedure such as primary and secondary data collection process. In case of
primary data collection method the data is to be collected based on interview, survey of the

2
selected respondents (Ragab and Arisha, 2018). On the other hand, the secondary
research is to collect data from journals, articles, newspaper sources and others.
In order to accomplish the research objectives the secondary data collecting method is
selected for this specific research topic.
Different sources of information are going to be used in order to compare different kinds of
data from the different sources (Mohajan, 2018). It provides a realistic view in terms of the
research topic by considering significant PDFs, books that would help to determine the
relevant theory that is related to the gig economy in developing countries.
Secondary data analysing is the process that refers to analysing the data that is collected by
others in an appropriate manner. The large-scale data set can be used in border to compare
the insights of different research. The secondary qualitative analysis method will be used as
the data collected by someone else will be used to answer the significant research
question (Ørngreen and Levinsen, 2017). In order to analyse the data different
themes will be developed by reviewing different journal articles and other websites
that are relevant to the research topic. This ensures that the different labour market
and the gig economy is going to be understood by developed themes.
Furthermore, different graphs and charts will be depicted from the already research papers
which can support the research objectives and help to gain insight of the paper.

4. Ethics
The major ethical issues that are faced while conducting research work is informed
consent. Informed consent is referred to as one by which a patent right to autonomy is
protected. Informed consent helps to seek to incorporate the autonomous right in terms of
self-determination. In case of primary research the free as well as informed concert of
the individual needs to be provided(Teams.ljmu.ac.uk. 2021). On the contrary, the
other research ethics that is necessary to be considered is the inversion of privacy as
well as the threat to dignity.
While conducting the research paper the two significant issues that has been estimated are:
 Retaining the anonymity and confidentiality of the research articles and journals
 Respecting the privacy of the authors
Therefore as per the LJMUs policy that includes academic misconduct policy, fair
access agreement must be considered while conducting the paper. In order to make sure
that the research is conducted significantly the research ethics necessary to be followed.
Therefore, according to the LJMU the following must be incorporated like research integrity,
research objectivity, honesty while collecting data from different sources and leadership as
well (ljmu.ac.uk. 2021).
It is also necessary for the researcher to ensure that the academic freedom as well
as the high quality research is maintained while collecting information about the
contribution of gig economy in the developing countries. Furthermore, the opportunity

3
as well as diversity throughout the research paper is significant to be developed through
the paper effectively.
