I- Information Security Basics: Testing Your Anti-virus Software Application
If you ever want to test your antivirus software, you can use the EICAR test file. The file is not an actual virus; it is simply a text file that contains a string of harmless code that prints the text. The file is mainly used to test your anti-virus application and make sure that it will detect the file. 1. You can download an EICAR test file from the EICAR website. Click on the Anti-Malware Test File Link (alternatively, go to https://www.eicar.org/?page_id=3950 ). 2. Before downloading any file type, make sure to read the instructions. Using the DOWNLOAD link on the right side of the page, you can download any of several forms of EICAR test file (Fig. 1.4) 3. Try downloading each form of the EICAR test file and note how your anti-virus software responds. If your anti-virus software application is active and working, it should display a pop-up window when you try to download and save the eicar.com or eicar.com.txt file. Take screenshot(s) of your computer to show how it responds. Explain what you understand.
