RULES IN LABORATORY
1. Students MUST wear proper attire as stated in the University’s rule.
2. For laboratory works, always put on covered shoes (sandal is not allowed). Safety shoes
must be put on in all engineering labs except in the computer lab.
3. Cap or hat is not allowed.
4. Round neck t-shirt and track bottom are not allowed. Students MUST wear Protective
(PPE) attire; lab coat, gloves and google.
5. Use or wear of jewellery is not allowed during the laboratory works.
6. Please sign your attendance.
7. Keep your books and other belongings on the racks provided outside the laboratory. Do
not place them on the laboratory bench (and do not bring library materials into the
laboratory where they might be damaged).
8. Work in the laboratory only as scheduled in the timetable unless your laboratory instructor
gives you permission.
9. Do not wander around the room/labs, distract other students, startle other students or
interfere with the laboratory experiments of others.
10. Eating and drinking are prohibited in the laboratory.
11. Report must be submitted on time (refer to lecturer/lab instructor).
12. Always follow the safety rules and any instructions given by your lab instructor.
13. Student must use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling equipment.
14. Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn, etc.) to the instructor
immediately, no matter how trivial it might seem. Do not panic.
15. Safety First. Be alert and proceed with caution at all times in the laboratory. Notify the
instructor immediately of any unsafe conditions you observe.
16. Any broken equipment must be reported immediately. Any damages due to of
carelessness and abuse would be taken action.
17. Serious action would be taken to those who copy or duplicate the laboratory reports of
others.
18. Any previous experiments data or reports are not allowed to bring into the laboratory.
19. Completed report must be submitted and verified (stamped and signed) by staff or course
instructors.

20. Students are not allowed to change or reposition any laboratory equipment such
as computer, computer software, extension wire and other parts without any
permission.
21. Students must get permissions from the instructor before leaving the laboratory in
any circumstances.
22. Taking out the laboratory equipment from the lab area is prohibited.
23. No student may work in the laboratory without the presence of lab instructor.
24. Student who cannot attend the laboratory works must submit official document
with valid reason (such as medical certificate) to the instructor as soon as
possible.
25. Student who cannot attend the laboratory with valid reason may request for a
replacement for the laboratory session (depending on the available slot time of lab
instructor).
26. Make sure that all the lab tools were cleaned and put all chairs and the
experiment tools /apparatus at the right place before leaving the laboratory.

INSTRUCTION: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.
1. Students are required to read this lab module before entering the lab session. Jot down all
the procedure in the blank sheets in this module. It will be included in the assessment!
2. Students who are not prepared for jotter sheet are not allowed to enter the lab session.
3. Plan and organize your lab work before the lab session.
5. For sample washing and drying, it requires 1 day to be completed. Hence, students
are advised to come on the next day to collect the dried sample.
6. Write all the results & discussion in this worksheet. Fill in the blanks for each
experiment.
8. Please submit this worksheet to the lab instructor once the experiment has been
completed.
10. For appendices, students may include pictures or any relevant raw data that would
be useful for results and discussion.
12. This assignment brings 20% from the total assessment percentage in the Analytical
Chemistry course (BPS1123).

INTRODUCTION
Drying is the process to remove the remaining solvent in the sample by using a
laboratorial oven. The sample is further treated for the next experiment and the dried
sample is important to remove the remaining solvent which can be detected when
doing the analysis. Dissolving is a process to dissolve the solid hair sample in nitric
acid so the sample is in the solution.
OBJECTIVE
1. To complete dry the hair sample.
2. To dissolve the hair sample in an acid solution.
REAGENTS/APPARATUS
______________________________________________________________________
PROCEDURE
Hair sampling
1. Place the hair sample into a 15mL sample tube vial using a forcep
2. Cut the hair as close to the scalp as possible but be extra careful not to cut the scalp.
3. Move slightly upwards to a new location and repeat to cut the hair again.
4. Collect the hair sample in a sampling boat and weight using an electrical balance for
the weight of more than 0.20 gram.
5. After the weight of the sample hair is sufficient. Cut the hair to smaller length for
about 1-2 cm in length.
6. Place the hair sample into a 15mL sample tube vial using a forcep.
7. Fill the sampling tube vial with distilled water until the whole sample is fully
submerged.
11. Place the sampling tube vial in the rack and make sure the level of bath water is
above the hair sample.
12. Remove the water in the sampling tube vial using a vacuum filtration apparatus. Use
a clipper or clamp to fasten the upper part of the glassware. Switch on the main switch at
the wall socket and the switch at the pump. Pour the sample into the filter and wait until
no drop can be seen.
13. Switch off the vacuum pump. Remove the upper clamp and carefully remove the
upper glassware of the filtration part.
QUESTIONS
1. Explain the purpose of using both distilled water and acetone for washing ?
3. Explain why students are required to use gloves or forceps which prevent the direct
bare-hand contact with the hair sample ?
