Part 1: Understanding Clauses

A clause is a group of words that contains both a subject and a verb. Clauses can be independent
or dependent (also called subordinate clauses).

● An independent clause expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence.
● A dependent clause does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone. It
usually starts with a subordinating conjunction (e.g., because, if, although) or a relative
pronoun (e.g., who, that, which).
