Answers to Term Test Study Guide Problems

This document contains sample answers to the Term Test Study Guide Problems. It only includes answers
rather than complete solutions; you will be required to show your work for similar questions on the Term
Test. See the Practice Term Test for examples of the explanations that are required.

6. Harlow Shapley was an astronomer and director of the Harvard College Observatory from 1921 to 1952.
He became fascinated with ants (yes, the insects!) when visiting an observatory in South America, and
conducted a number of experiments with them.
Suppose that Shapley begins his observations of a group of ants at noon, and five minutes after he
begins, there are 5 ants. More ants continue to arrive, and he determines that the number of ants is
increasing by 5% each minutes. Find a formula for the function A(t) that models the number of ants
present at the picnic t minutes past noon for t ≥ 5. A(t) = 5(1.05)t−5

15. Coffee is being poured at a constant rate into an unusually shaped coffee cup, shown below. Let h be
the height of the coffee above the bottom of the cup, and let t be time from the beginning of the pour.

1 Understanding how the concentration of the drug changes is crucial in making decisions about when the next dosage should

be given, and can depend on factors such as the method of delivery and a patient’s age or weight. Studying how a drug and
body interact is known as pharmokinetics.

16. Elizabeth is a student who started two small businesses
(a) Elizabeth’s first business, started in 2015, sells homemade brownie mixes. The profit during her
15th month of business was 50% higher than in her 3rd month of business. She predicts that her
profit is growing exponentially. If this assumption is true, in what month will her profit from the
brownie business be three times what it was in the first month? You can round your answer to
the nearest month. 32.5 months
(b) Elizabeth’s second business sells handmade beaded jewellery. She earned a total profit of $258
during her 2nd month of business and a total profit of $320 during her 4th month of business.
i. Based on the data for these two months, if the profit for Elizabeth’s jewellery business is
modelled by a linear function, what would the model predict her profit during her eighth
month of business to be? $444
ii. Based on the data for these two months, if the profit for Elizabeth’s jewellery business is
instead modelled by an exponential function, what would the model predict her profit during
her eighth month of business to be? $492.28
17. The effective potential energy, Ueff , of a sun-planet pair changes according to the distance r between
the planet and the sun. By convention, if Ueff is negative then there is an attraction between the sun
and the planet while if Ueff is positive then there is a repulsion between the sun and the planet. For
some sun-planet system, suppose that

asymptote: that is, how does the planet’s attraction towards the sun change as r → ∞? Ueff = 0;
as the planet and the sun get far apart, the potential energy will go towards 0.
(b) Give the equation of the vertical asymptote of Ueff , and explain its physical significance.r = 0; as
the planet and the sun get closer together, the potential energy increases
