Lesson I
Definition:
Quadratic Equation in one variable is a mathematical sentence of degree 2 that can be written in the following standard form
ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a,b and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0.
In the equation, ax2 is the quadratic term, bx is the linear term and c is the constant term.
Example:
1. 2x2 + 5x -3 = 0 is a quadratic in standard form with a =2, b =5 and c =-3;
2x2 is the quadratic term
5x is the linear term
-3 is the constant term
2. 3x(x-2) = 10 is a quadratic equation,however it is not written in standard form.
To write in standard form, expand the product and make one side of the equation zero.
3x(x-2) = 10 →3x2 - 6x = 10
3x2 - 6x - 10 = 0, a=3, b= -6 and c = -10
3x2 is the quadratic term, why?
-6x is the linear term, why?
-10 is the constant term, why?
ACTIVITY:
Do the following: Write in standard form.Identify the value of a, b and c and give the quadratic term,linear term and constant
term.
1. 2x2 + 4x = 7
2. 3x - 2x2 = 6
3. X(2x + 5)= 3
4. 2x(x-5) = 15
5. (x +2)(x - 2) = 0

Answer the following;

Challenge: Transform the equation in standard form, ax2 + bx + c = 0
2x(x + 4) = (x - 3)(x - 3)

Lesson 2
Worksheet2
Solving Quadratic Equation:(by extracting the square root, by factoring, by completing the square, and by using the quadratic
formula)
Quadratic Equations that can be written in the form of x2 = k can be solved by
A. By extracting the square root
Example:Find the solutions of the equation x2 - 16 = 0
Write the equation in the form x2 = k
x2 - 16 = 0→ x2-16 + 16 = 0 + 16
x2 = 16 → x = +_ √16
X =+_ 4
To check if the values of x satisfy the equation,substitute these values in the original equation.
For x = 4: For x = 4:
x2 - 16 = 0 x2 - 16 = 0
2
4 - 16 = 0 (-4)2 - 16 = 0
16 -16 = 0 16 -16 = 0
Both values of x satisfy the equation.

ACTIVITY: 1
Answer the following:
1. x2 - 4 = 0
2. r2 - 100 = 0
3. 2x2 =50
4. 4x2 = 16
5. x2 = 36
B. By Factoring:
1. To solve quadratic equation by factoring, transform the equation into standard form if necessary.
2. Factor the quadratic equation.
3. Apply the zero product property by setting each factor of the quadratic equation equal to zero.
4. Solve the resulting equation.
5. Check the values of the variable obtained by substituting each in the original equation.

Example: Find the solutions of x2 + 9x = -8

a.Trasform the equation into standard form→ ax2 + bx + c = 0
x2 + 9x =-8→x2 + 9x + 8 = 0
b. Factor the quadratic expression x2 + 9x + 8
x2 + 9x + 8 = 0 →(x + 1)(x + 8) = 0
c. Apply the zero product property by setting the factors equal to 0.
(x + 1) = 0 ; (x + 8) = 0
d. Solve each resulting equation.
(x + 1) = 0→x + 1-1=0-1 ; (x + 8) = 0 →x + 8 - 8 = 0 - 8
X = -1 x = -8
e. Check the values of the variable obtained by substituting each in the original equation.
x2 + 9x = -8
For x = -1 For x = -8
x2 + 9x = -8 x2 + 9x = -8
2
(-1) + 9(-1) = -8 (-8)2 + 9(-8) = -8
1 + (-9) = -8 64 + (-72) = -8
-8 = -8 -8 = -8
ACTIVITY 2
Solve these:
1. x2 + 8x + 16 = 0 4.11r + 15 = -2r2
2
2. x + 6x = 16 5. 2s2 + 8s -10 = 0
2
3. t -5t - 14 = 0

Lesson 3
Worksheet3
This is My Sum and this is My Product
Use the values of a, b, and c of the following equation to find the sum and product.
Example1: Find the sum and product.
2x2 + 8x - 10 = 0; a=2, b=8, c=-10
Sum of the roots = -b/a Product of the roots = c/a
Sum = -(8)/2 product = -10/2
= -8/2 = -5e
= -4
Therefore, the sum of the roots is -4 and the product of the roots is -5.
Example 2:
X2 + 4x + 3 = 0; a = 1 b=4 c=3
Sum of the roots = -b/a Product of the roots = c/a
Sum = -(4)/1 product = 3/1
= -4 =3
Therefore, the sum of the roots is -4 and the product of the roots is 3.

ACTIVITY 1:
Do the following:
Equation sum product
x2 + 4x –21 = 0
6x2 + 12x – 18 = 0
x2 - 3x - 10 = 0
x2 + 5x – 14 = 0
x2 + 3x – 18 = 0

Lesson 4
Worksheet 4:
Quadratic functions:These are functions that can be described by equations of the form
y=ax2 + bx +c , where a, b and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0. The highest power of the independent variable x is 2, Thus the
equation of a quadratic function is of degree 2.In aquadratic function equal differences in x produce 2nd equal differences in y
and its graph is a smooth curve called parabola.
The general form y=ax2 + bx + c can be transformed in a vertex form y =a(x-h) + k, (h,k) is the vertex of the parabola.
Example:Rewrite f(x) = x2 -4x -10 in the form y =a(x-h)2 + k
Using the formula;
h= -b/2a and k = 4ac-b2/4a
Solution: y = x2 -4x -10 , a =1, b = -4, c = -10
h= -b/2a k = 4ac-b2/4a
= -(-4)/2(1) =4(1)(-10)- (-4)2/4(1)
= 4/2 =-40-16/4
h=2 =-56/4
k = -14
Answer: y =(x-2)2 – 14

ACTIVITY 1
Answer the following:
Rewrite the following quadratic functions in the form y =a(x-h)2 + k.
1. y=x2 -2x -15
2. y=x2 -2x -3
3. y=2x2 + 4x
4. y=x2 -6x +14
5. y=2x2 + 5x -3
