1. (a) If an electron of hydrogen atom is excited to n=7 and falls to a lower


energy level to form a Paschen series.
(i) Calculate the energy of the electron at the excited state. (2 marks)
(ii) Calculate the energy emitted due to this transition. (2 marks)
(iii) Calculate the wavelength due to this transition in nanometer.
(1 mark)

(b) A photon of light with wavelength 434 nm falls in the visible light region
and forms a line in the emission spectrum of hydrogen atom.
(i) State the name of this emission spectrum series. (1 mark)
(ii) Determine the transition of electrons that corresponding to the
above wavelength. (2 marks)
(iii) Calculate the minimum energy required to completely remove an
electron due to this emission spectrum series in kJmol-1. (2 marks)

2. (a) Arrange the following atomic orbitals in the ascending order of energy.
3d, 3s, 5p, 4d, 2s, 4p, 4s
(2 marks)

(b) The set of quantum numbers for two electrons with the highest energy of
an atom A are shown as below:
[3, 2, -1, +1/2] and [3, 2, +1, +1/2]
(i) Determine the type of orbitals designated by these sets of quantum
numbers. (1 mark)
(ii) Write the complete electronic configuration of an atom A. (1 mark)
(iii) Write the electronic configuration of ion A if three electrons were
removed from atom A. (1 mark)
