MENSURATION AND COORDINATE GEOMETRY

Class 09 - Mathematics
Section A
1.
(b) 96 cm2
Explanation: Let ABC be the right-angled triangle, right angled at B, with circumradius r = 10 cm and BC = 12 cm.
We know that, circumradius is half of the hypotenuse, therefore AC = 2(10) = 20 cm

Now, in △ABC, we have

AC2 + AB2 + BC2 [by using Pythagoras theorem]
⇒ (20)2 = (12)2 + AB2
⇒ AB2 = 400 - 144 = 256
⇒ AB = 16 cm [taking positive sign]
Area of △ABC = 1

2
× BC × AB = 1

2
× 12 × 16 = 96 cm2

2. (a) 7 cm
Explanation: Let ABC be the right angled triangle with sides a, b and c, where a < b < c, i.e. c is the hypotenuse and a and b
are the perpendicular sides.

∵ Perimeter of △ABC = 12 cm
∴ a + b + c = 12 ...(i)
and area of △ABC = 6 cm2
× a × b = 6 ⇒ ab = 12 ...(ii)
1

2

Now, from Eq. (i), we have a + b = 12 - c ...(iii)

On squaring both sides, we get (a + b)2 = (12 - c)2
⇒ a2 + b2 + 2ab = 144 + c2 - 24c
⇒ a2 + b2 + 2 × 12 = 144 + c2 - 24c [using Eq. (ii)]
⇒ c2 + 24 = 144 + c2 - 24c [∵ a2 + b2 = c2, using Pythagoras theorem in △ABC]
⇒ 24c = 144 - 24

⇒ 24c = 120 ⇒ c = 5
∴ a + b = 12 - c = 12 - 5 = 7cm
3.
(c) 100
Explanation: Given, dimensions of a brick are

1/6
PARIKSIT INCORPORATION, ROURKELA, ODISHA
l = 22.5 cm, b = 10 cm and h = 7.5 cm
and total surface area of container = 9.375 m2
Now, total surface area of a brick
= 2 (l × b + b × h + h × l)
= 2(22.5 × 10 + 10 × 7.5 + 7.5 × 22.5)
= 2(225 + 75 + 168.75) = 2 × 468.75 = 937.5 cm2
= 937.5

100×100
m2 [∵1 m = 100 cm]
∴ Number of bricks that painted out of this container
= Total surface area of container

Total surface area of bricks

9.375 9.375×100×100 937500
= 937.5
= 337.5
= 9375
= 100
100×100

Hence, 100 bricks can be painted out.

4.
(c) 125%
Explanation: Let each side of cube be x.
Then, surface area of cube = 6x2
If side is increased by 50%, then increased length
= (1 + 50

100
) x = 1.5 x

Then, increased surface area = 6(1.5x)2 = 6 × 1.5 × 1.5 × x2

∴ Percentage increase in surface area
Increase in surface area
= Total surface area
× 100%
2 2 2
6×1.5×1.5x x −6x 6x (2.25−1)
= 2
× 100 = 2
× 100
6x 6x

= 1.25 × 100% = 125%

5. (a) II, IV
Explanation: Let us identify the sign of y for each sign of x.
x
We have, x = my ⇒ y = , where m < 0 m

When x is (+ve), then y is (-ve) and when x is (-ve), then y is (+ve).

Thus, the coordinate of points lying on the line are of the form (+x, -y) and (-x, +y), which implies that points lying in second
and fourth quadrants.
Hence, the line x = my, where m < 0, lies in II and IV quadrants.
6.
(b) (3, -5)
Explanation: Let us plot the points P(15, 9), Q(7, 10) and R(-5, -4) on the graph paper and join PQ and QR.

Now, through P, draw a line parallel to QR and through R, draw a line parallel to PQ. It can be seen that these lines cut each
other at (3, -5).
Hence, the fourth vertex is S(3, -5).
7.
(c) 374.5 cm2
Explanation: Given a rectangle ABCD inscribed in a circle, with AB = 28 cm and BC = 21 cm.

2/6
PARIKSIT INCORPORATION, ROURKELA, ODISHA
Now, join A and C, then in △ABC, we have
AC2 = AB2 + BC2 = (28)2 + (21)2
= 784 + 441 = 1225
⇒ AC = 35 cm [taking positive square root]
∴Diameter of the circle = 35 cm
⇒ Radius of circle = cm 35

Area of circle = π r2 = = 962.5 cm2

Also, area of rectangle ABCD = 28 × 21 = 588 cm2

Hence, required area = Area of circle - Area of rectangle
= 962.5 - 588 = 374.5 cm2
8.
(b) 96.25 cm2
Explanation: Radius of the semi-circle with AC as diameter, r1 = 14

2
= 7 cm

and radius of the semi-circle with AD as diameter, r2 = 4
cm

Now, area of shaded portion = Area of radius of semi-circle with AC as diameter + 4 × Area of semi-circle with AD as

(d) (0, 4), (3, -2), (-3, -2)
Explanation: The coordinates of points A, B and C are (0, 4), (3, -2) and (-3, -2), respectively.
10.

Width of rectangle ABCD

= 13 + 4 = 17 m.
Length of rectangular grass plot = 25 m.
Width of rectangular grass plot = 13 m.
∴ Area of footpath = Area of rectangle ABCD - Area of rectangle PQRS

= 29 × 17 - 25 × 13
= 493 - 325
= 168 m2
= 168 × 100 × 100 cm2
= 1680000 cm2
Hence, the number of tiles required

13. Since, the tank is open at the top.

∴ surface area of tank = Area of four walls + Area of base

Area of outer circle - Area of inner circle = 550 cm2

R = 20 cm and r = 15 cm
18. Let the dimensions of the rectangular box are 4 × x m 2x m and 3x m.
The total surface area of the box
= 2(lb + bh + hd)
= 2(4x × 2x + 2x × 3x + 3x × 4x)
= 2(8x2 + 6x2 + 12x2)
= 52x2
The cost of covering the box with paper at ₹12 per m2
= 52x2 × 12
= ₹624 x2
and the cost of covering the box with paper at ₹13.50 per m2
= 52x2 × 13.50
= 702x2
Given, Difference between the cost of covering the box with paper at ₹12 per m2 and with paper at ₹13.50 per is ₹1248
∴ 702x2 - 624x2 = 1248
78x2 = 1248
x2 = 16
x=4
∴ The length of box = 4x = 4x × 4 = 16 m

The breadth of box = 2x = 2 × 4 = 8 m

The height of box = 3x = 3 × 4 = 12 m
Hence, the dimensions of rectangular box are 16 m, 8 m, and 12 m.
