Sheet (2) Vehicle Dynamics (1)

Problem 1. A passenger car with 15 kN Its frontal area 1.8 𝑚2 drag

coefficient is 0.3. Maximum power of the petrol engine is 110 HP @ 6000
rpm. If the rolling resistance is 0.02. Calculate

1. Draw the aerodynamics resistance verses speed up to 250 km/hr.

2. Draw the total motion resistance (aerodynamics and rolling) verses
vehicle speed with speed up to 250 km/hr.
3. Draw the vehicle road power verses speed with speed up to 250 km/hr.
4. Calculate the maximum permissible speed based on maximum power.
5. Calculate the final drive reduction ratio to reach the maximum speed if
the top gear (5th gear shift) is direct drive
6. Calculate the maximum permissible speed based on engine actual
characteristics.

Problem 2. A passenger car with 20 kN Its frontal area 2 𝑚2 drag coefficient

is 0.3. Maximum power of the petrol engine is 160 HP @ 5800 rpm and
maximum torque 200 N.m @ 4000 rpm. If the rolling resistance is 3% of the
car weight. Calculate

1. Draw the vehicle road power verses speed with speed up to 250 km/hr.
2. Maximum permissible speed based on engine maximum power.
3. Overall reduction ratio between the engine and road wheels if the tire
radius is 0.3 m
4. Find the recommended final drive reduction ratio to reach the maximum
speed if the top gear is a direct drive.
5. Calculate the net residual power at 80 km/hr.
Problem 3. The technical data of passenger car is shown in the following
specifications, Four Stroke Petrol Engine with Max. Power 90 HP @ 5500
rpm, The reduction ratios in the following table.

First reduction ratio 3.16

Second reduction ratio 2
Third reduction ratio 1.71
Fourth reduction ratio 1
Final drive reduction ratio 4.2

Overall transmission efficiency is 0.85 and tire designation 205 / 55 R 16

Requirements
1. Draw the engine characteristics curves.
2. Explain the tire characteristics in detail.
3. Draw the generated traction force verses vehicle speed.

Problem 4. Passenger car with GVW of 12 kN, frontal area is 2 𝑚2 and drag
coefficient 0.32, wheel radius 0.35 m, and the rolling resistance coefficient is
0.02.

Requirements
1. Plot the car motion resistances of a range of speed up to 180 km/h.
2. Based on the previous problem, calculate the maximum speed.
3. Calculate the residual traction force at 100 km/h on each gear shift.
Problem 5. A passenger car with GVW 16 kN and wheelbase 2.5 m is fitted
with a petrol engine that has maximum out 90 kw @ 6000 rpm. It is also fitted
with 5 forward speeds gearbox and its gear ratios are

First reduction ratio 3.32

Second reduction ratio 2.31
Third reduction ratio 1.43
Fourth reduction ratio 1.04
Fives reduction ratio 0.82
Final drive reduction ratio 3.9

If the frontal area is 1.8 𝑚2 , drag coefficient is 0.3, tires rolling radius is
0.33 m, and rolling resistance coefficient is 0.018. It is required to do the
following:

1. Draw the engine characteristics curves.

2. Draw the generated traction force curves for the 5 gear shifts for the petrol
engine if the transmission efficiency is 0.94.
3. Draw rolling resistance and air resistance curves for this car up to the
maximum speed range.
4. Find the maximum vehicle speed on flat road based on the resistance and
traction effort curves
5. Plot the available traction (to the limit of adhesion) for this vehicle on dry
asphalt (ϕ = 0.8) if it is FWD and the static front axle load is 50 % of vehicle
weight.
