Teachers’ work-life balance and their overall health determine their health in

their profession and overall health as individuals. When a teacher can have a
work-life balance, that means that the teachers are energetic, motivated to
teach their students, and enable learners to meet their potential to the
fullest.

As a future educator, are you ready to experience stress and burnout? If not,
this topic will help you learn how to manage your stress and burnout when
you are already on the field, so please bear with me and listen carefully.
There are so many reasons and causes of teacher stress and burnout. One of
those are highworkload, students behavior, lack of support, and personal life
impact. Let's first talk about highworkload.

Imagine being a teacher. You have lots of students, and you need to make
sure they learn everything they need to know. That means planning lessons,
grading homework, and meeting with parents.

It's like having a big, full to-do list every day. Sometimes, the list gets so long
that it feels impossible to finish it all. This can make teachers feel stressed,
tired, and burnt out.

Here are some examples:

 Long hours: Teachers often stay late at school to finish grading

papers or plan lessons. They may also take work home with them,
which can make it hard to relax.

 Demanding curriculum: Teachers need to teach a lot of different

subjects, and they are always expected to keep up with new teaching
methods and standards. This can feel like a lot to learn and keep track
of.

 Administrative tasks: Besides teaching, teachers also have to do a

lot of paperwork, like filling out attendance records or writing reports.

Students Behavior –Imagine trying to teach a group of students who are

constantly talking, interrupting, or even acting out. This can be extremely
stressful for teachers, especially when they are trying to focus on teaching
and helping everyone to learn. As a future teacher, we have to be prepared
to deal with students different behavior specially that we are going to teach
in elementary grade where we need to put so much effort to get their
attentions.

 Lack of support - Teachers often feel overwhelmed and stressed when

they don't have the support they need. This can come from different
sources:

1. Administration- teachers may feel like they're constantly having to

fight for their programs, defend their teaching methods, or get
resources for their students. They might also feel like their hard work
goes unnoticed.

2. Colleagues- a negative work environment with unsupportive

colleagues can make it difficult for teachers to share their struggles
and feel understood.

3. Outside of work - teachers need a support system outside of work,

but sometimes they lack the time or energy to connect with family
and friends. This can lead to feelings of isolation and make it harder to
cope with stress.

 Personal life impact - teachers are human too, and their personal lives
can have a big impact on their well-being. When they're dealing with
personal challenges like family issues, health problems, or financial
stress, it can make it harder to cope with the demands of their job. This
extra stress can lead to feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and burnt out.
It's important to remember that teachers are juggling both their
professional and personal lives, and when one side gets too heavy, it can
affect the other.
 Strategies for maintaining mental and physical health

 Self-care - is essential for teachers to prevent burnout and maintain

their effectiveness in the classroom. This means taking time for activities
that nourish your body, mind, and spirit.

Examples: Getting enough sleep, eating healthy meals, engaging in

hobbies, taking breaks during the day, and seeking professional help when
needed.

 Setting Boundaries - is crucial for teachers to achieve a healthy work-

life balance. This involves establishing clear limits on your availability and
responsibilities, ensuring you have time for yourself and your loved ones.

Examples: Designating specific times for grading and responding to emails,

setting limits on after-hours work, and communicating these boundaries to
colleagues, students, and families.

 Practice Mindfulness - involves paying attention to the present

moment without judgment. This can help teachers manage stress,
improve focus, and enhance their emotional resilience.

Examples: Meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, and taking short

breaks to appreciate your surroundings.

 Engage in Physical Activities - it can help to boost mood and energy. It

is a powerful tool for managing stress and improving mood. Regular
exercise releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects, and
improves sleep quality.

Examples: Running, swimming, dancing, cycling, hiking, or simply taking a

brisk walk.
 Connect with colleagues - can provide a sense of community and
support. Sharing experiences, challenges, and successes with fellow
teachers can help manage stress and foster a sense of belonging.

Examples: Participating in team activities, organizing social events, and

joining teacher support groups or professional learning communities.

 Build a supportive network - it goes beyond colleagues and includes

family, friends, and mentors. These individuals can provide emotional
support, practical assistance, and a sense of belonging.

Examples: Spending time with loved ones, joining clubs or groups,

volunteering, and seeking out mentors or role models.

 Stay connected with loved ones - it is essential for emotional well-

being. Nurturing these relationships provides a source of comfort and
support, reminding teachers of their life outside of the classroom.

Examples:Regularly calling or texting loved ones, scheduling quality time

together, expressing your appreciation, and making an effort to stay in
touch.
