Signal Tones
• The AMU6500 supports signal tones:
o The intercom request signal.
o The E-Call signal.
o The error notification tone.

3D Audio
The 3D audio function is the simulation of natural listening environment via technical solution for virtual
placement of sound sources. 3D audio is done by simulating the characteristics of the ear, head, body
and room by applying a head-related-transfer-function (HRTF) to the specific audio signal. The result
is a binaural audio signal for headphones.
HRTF sounds support:
• Better intelligibility in multi-speaker speech setups with 3D audio compared to mono or
stereo setups.
• Easy locating and identifying of incoming audio.
• The spatial mapping of the different sound sources in the virtual room is configurable.

Becker Avionics Installation
Installation Requirements

2.4 Installation Requirements

The installation of the device(s) depends on the type of aircraft and its equipment and therefore only
general information can be given in this section.
The installation of AMU6500 into an aircraft may be carried out by an authorized
installation company. The country regulations always have to be obeyed.
• The device must not be opened.
• Keep enough distance to devices with integrated ventilator fans in order to
ensure free circulation of the cooling air.
• The installation area must have a minimum distance of 30 cm from the
magnetic aircraft compass, to prevent any interference to the magnetic
compass.
• Forced cooling is not required.

The AMU6500 is made for installation in cockpit and cabin environment.

These limitations apply for the installation:
• The installation must be in accordance with the local aviation authority
approved guidelines.
• The personnel installing this device must ensure that the aircraft installation
conditions are within the ETSO/TSO standards applicable for the specific
type or class of aircraft.
• The conditions and tests for ETSO/TSO approval of this article are minimum
performance standards.
• The equipment is not qualified for installation in areas with fluid
contamination.
• Changes or modifications made to this equipment not expressly approved in
written form by Becker may void the authorization to operate this equipment.

• Use only cables which are qualified for aircraft use (self-extinguishing).
• For wire types please see "Connector P1" page 43.
• Fit sleeves over the solder joints on the equipment connector.
• Each single cable harness of a device connector must have separate
shielding.
• HF cable should not be included in the cable harnesses.
• Use the recommended fuses in the power supply line for the protection of
the application, see "Technical Data", page 23.

• Check the wiring carefully before power up the device(s) and check
particularly correct connection of the power supply lines.

Display - Viewing Angle and Readability

The readability of the display depends on the viewing angle.
During installation, make sure that the viewing angle on the display is as straight as possible.
We recommend the installation in the pilot's direct field of view and the smallest possible distance
between the view to the outside and the view to the display.
Polarizing sunglasses can reduce the readability of the display.

2.11 Functions
Operation Modes
The AMU6500 can be operated these modes:
• Monitoring operation mode.
• Intercom operation mode.
• TX operation mode.

In case, that two users are connected to one LRU (Line Replaceable Unit) each
user may have a different operation mode selected.
Example:
User1 (main operator) is in TX operation mode
User2 (passenger) is in intercom operation mode.

Monitoring Operation Mode

The monitoring operation mode is selected when no request for other operation mode exists for a
given user.
Selection of Channels
• The user can select for monitoring one or more out of the configured channels (configured
as RX, TX).

Intercom Operation Mode

The intercom operation mode is selected when the user is not in TX operation mode and one of these
conditions are true:
• The VOX function is open and there is a signal on users' microphone line.
• The control input of the IC-PTT function is active.
• "TX-PTT-IN" is active and "IC via radio-PTT" is selected by HMI for a user.

The TX operation mode has priority over intercom operation mode.

TX Operation Mode
The TX operation mode is selected when all of these conditions are true:
• At least one channel is configured as TX-channel.
• The selected TX-channel is not occupied (by another user).
• "TX-PTT-IN" is active.

The access rights of the user to the channels (none, RX, TX, MultiTX/Simulcast)
are adjustable in the configuration.
• The user can select more than one transceiver out of the as
MultiTX/Simulcast configured TX-channels. Condition: the channels are not
marked as occupied.
NOTICE:
• Transmission with more than one transceiver at the same time is possible.
• When a TX-channel is occupied (by another user) this TX-channel cannot be
used for MultiTX (Simulcast).
o The user gets an audible error notification in this situation.

Headset
The AMU6500 supports up to three stereo headsets with standard microphones.
• The sensitivity of the microphone input and the level of the phone output can be
configured.
• The AMU6500 supports standard high impedance headsets.
o Stereo and mono headsets are supported.
o There can be three headsets per device.

NOTICE: It is possible to connect a fourth headset, for details contact Becker Avionics.

3D Audio
• The AMU6500 supports 3D audio listening via HRTF-technology (Head-Related-Transfer
Function).
• The spatial mapping of the different sound sources in the virtual room is configurable.
• For 3D audio, a stereo headset is required.
• The 3D audio is available only for user 1.

The spatial separation of audio sources can make the intelligibility of speech better, when some
talkers are present at the same time.
Due to the psycho-acoustic nature of the 3D audio implementation with HRTFs, the spatial impression
depends on the listener.
Some individuals have a front-back confusion. This phenomenon makes it difficult to identify between
audio sources in front or behind the listener.

Installation Becker Avionics
Post Installation Check

2.12 Post Installation Check

After the device/system is installed completely do a test to make sure the system is functioning. Make
sure that the compliance with the authority required procedures is obeyed.
The description that follows gives guidance for such tests.

Mechanical Installation and Wiring Check

• Make sure that all cables are fixed securely and shields connected properly to signal
ground.
• Examine the movement of controls to make sure that there is no interference.
• Make sure that all screws are tight and the connectors on the rear side of the device are
secured.

Power Supply
• Examine the power supply lines and the correct polarity.
• Make sure that the power supply is within the specified limits, with and without a running
engine.

Power-On Check
• Power-up the aircraft systems and confirm normal operation of all functions of the
AMU6500.

Test - Emergency Mode with a Headset

• Cut off the device power supply by pulling the audio circuit breaker.
• Connect a headset to the USER1 jacks.
o Make sure that COM1 transceiver can be heard in the USER1 headset.
o Make sure that COM1 can key and transmit the USER1 microphone audio by verifying
received sidetone or checking reception of the transmission with another radio tuned to
receive this transmission.
• Apply the device power supply again by the audio circuit breaker for normal operation.
• Select EMRG mode with the corresponding panel switch.
o Make sure that COM1 transceiver can be heard in the USER1 headset.
o Make sure that COM1 can key and transmit the USER1 microphone audio by verifying
received sidetone or checking reception of the transmission with another radio tuned to

o Make sure the assignment of the installed transceivers and transceiver keys for
transmission.
o Make sure the quality of clear audio from the USER1 microphone when selected for
transmission and USER1 PTT key is pushed.
(Because the audio panel can be configured to simulate received sidetone internally,
verifying transmission with a separate radio not in the system is recommended).
NOTICE: Repeat the above test for all installed AMU6500 device(s).

70 AMU6500 DV17670.03 Issue 03 February 2020

Becker Avionics Installation
Post Installation Check

Test - Audio from RX and Alert Sources

• Connect a headset to the USER1 headset jacks.
o Make sure that you can hear all the installed RX-devices (NAV/ADF/DME). Use test
signal generators/transmitters when necessary.
o Make sure that you can hear all the installed alert source when they send an
alert/message.
