➢ Comparative of Adjectives and Adverbs

Comparative for adjective:

a/ Adjectives with one syllable: • Good ➔ better


1. Usually add “er“ • Bad ➔ worse

• Fast => faster • Far ➔ farther / further

2. Ending in –e: add “r”

• large => larger c/ Adjectives with two syllables and the


following endings:
3. Ending in a vowel + a consonant: double the
consonant, add “er” 1. Two syllables not ending in -y, -ow, -le, -er:
more + adjective
• big => bigger
• polite => more polite
b/ Irregular adjectives:
2. Some two-syllable adjectives, especially • narrow => narrower
ending in –y: y => i, add “er”
Adjectives with three syllables or more: more +
• hungry => hungrier adjective

3. Some two-syllable adjectives ending in –ow: • interesting => more interesting

Comparative for adverb:

Practice

There are mistakes in the comparatives of adjectives and adverbs in each of the sentences below. Write
each sentence out correctly.

Example:

I can eat much quicklier than my brother.

→ I can eat much more quickly than my brother.

If you want to run faster, you should train more harder.

Participle

Practice

Use can’t have, might have or must have + past participle to complete the second sentence so that it
has a similar meaning to the first sentence.

Example:
Ben’s unhappy so I’m sure he didn’t pass his exam.
→ Ben’s unhappy so he can’t have passed his exam.
