Read the Case Study below carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Socials skills traits help build an internal moral compass, allowing individuals to make good
choices in thinking and behavior, resulting in social competence. They are goal oriented with
both main goals and sub-goals For example, a workplace interaction initiated by a new employee
with a senior employee will first contain a main goal. This will gather information, and then the
sub- goal will be to establish a rapport in order to obtain the main goal. We all have different
personalities, different wants and needs, and different ways of showing our emotions. Navigating
through this all takes tact and cleverness -especially if we hope to succeed in life Conflict
management is the practice of being able to identify and handle conflicts sensibly, fairly, and
efficiently. Since conflicts in a business are a natural part of the workplace, it is important that
there are people who understand conflicts and know how to resolve them. This is important in
today’s market more than ever. Everyone is striving to show how valuable they are to the
company they work for and at times, this can lead to disputes with other members of the team.

a) Discuss any five characteristics of social skills (5marks)

Answer

Empathy: The ability to understand and share the feelings of others.

Communication: The ability to express oneself clearly and effectively, as well as to listen to
others and understand their perspectives.

Interpersonal awareness: The ability to recognize and understand one’s own emotions, as well as
the emotions of others.

Self-regulation: The ability to control one’s emotions and behaviors, even in challenging
situations.

Social responsibility: The ability to consider the impact of one’s actions on others and to take
responsibility for one’s behavior.
b) Explain five ways in which one can use to improve emotional intelligence (5marks)

Answer

Practicing self-awareness: Taking time to reflect on one’s own emotions, strengths, and
weaknesses can help improve emotional intelligence.

Practicing empathy: Trying to understand and share the feelings of others can help improve
emotional intelligence.

Learning to manage emotions: Practicing techniques such as meditation or deep breathing can
help improve emotional regulation.

Practicing effective communication: Learning to express oneself clearly and listen to others
actively can help improve emotional intelligence.

Seeking feedback: Asking for feedback from others can help identify areas for improvement and
provide opportunities for growth.

c) Explain five conflict management techniques (5 marks)

Answer

Collaboration: Working together with others to find a mutually beneficial solution to a conflict.

Compromise: Finding a middle ground that satisfies the needs of all parties involved in a
conflict.

Mediation: Bringing in a neutral third party to help facilitate a resolution to a conflict.

Avoidance: Avoiding the conflict altogether, if possible, to prevent further escalation.

Assertiveness: Expressing one’s own needs and feelings in a direct and respectful manner, while
also listening to the needs and feelings of others.
