What is an SGPA to Percentage Calculator?

In simple terms, a calculator is used to calculate a
specific value after mathematical operations. Likewise,
an SGPAto-percentage calculator is a tool or
specially-designed calculator that converts the SGPA
(Semester Grade Point Average) grade points to
percentage values. These conversions are usually
used in the education field.

What is SGPA?
The full form of SGPA is Semester Grade Point
Average. This grading parameter is used by
institutions to give the performance grading of
students for a semester. SGPA is most widely used by
colleges or institutions but is not common for all of
them. Hence, a calculator to convert these SGPA
points into percentages is always needed or asked by

basic elements like Semesters, Grade Points, & Credit
Points.

Semester: The semester is of 6 months and

academic years are usually divided into
semesters for better & detailed learning of the
course.
Grade Point: These points represent the
performance of students in a specific subject
learned during the course. These points are
directly proportional to the knowledge of the
students in that particular subject
Credit Points: These points represent the
dedication of students to a particular subject in
terms of hours. Every student needs to spend
a definite time period on each subject of the
semester to earn qualifying credit points.

How to Calculate SGPA?

The results of each subject of a course are usually
provided in terms of credit points. Students need to
first calculate their SGPA for a particular semester
from these credit points before converting them into
percentages.

Here are some simple steps that can be followed to

get SGPA value for a semester.

Step 1: Write down all the credit points for different

subjects as mentioned in your performance sheet.
Step 2: Multiply the credit point of each subject
with its grade point.
Step 3: Now, add the results of these
multiplications for each subject.
Step 4: Add all the credit points for each subject.
Step 5: Divide the result of Step 3 by Step 4.
Step 6: the result obtained will be treated as your
SGPA for the semester.

Step 1: 3, 2, 3, 2
Step 2: 3 x 9 = 27, 2 x 8 = 16, 3 x 8 = 24, 2 x 7 = 14
Step 3: 27+16 + 24 + 14 = 81
Step 4: 3 + 2 + 3 + 2 = 10
Step 5: 81/10 = 8.1
Step 6: SGPA = 8.1

Step 1: 4, 3, 3, 2, 3, 2
Step 2: 4 x 8 = 32, 3 x 8 = 24, 3 x 9 = 27, 2 x 7 = 14,
3 x 8 = 24, 2 x 7 = 14
Step 3: 32 + 24 + 27 + 14 + 24 + 14 = 135
Step 4: 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 2 = 17
Step 5: 135/17 = 7.94
Step 6: SGPA = 7.94

Formula to Calculate SGPA from Grade Points &

Credit Points.
The steps mentioned to calculate the SGPA point from
the grade points of each subject of a semester can be
represented through a formula as mentioned below.

SGPA (Si) = Ʃ (Ci x Gi) / Ʃ Ci

In this formula, Si represents the SGPA for the ith

semester, Ci represents the credit point of each
subject in the ith semester, and Gi represents the
grade point of each subject in the ith semester.

Formula to Calculate/Convert SGPA to Percentage

Percentage = (SGPA x 10) - 7.5

The above-mentioned formula can be divided into two

steps for a simplified calculation:

Step 1: SGPA x 10

Step 2: (SGPA x 10) - 7.5

How to Convert SGPA to Percentage?

To get the overall result of your qualifying course in
percentage, you first need to calculate the SGPA of all
the semesters using the above-mentioned points. Add
the SGPA points of all the semesters to get the overall
SGPA point.

After you have the overall SGPA value, put it in the

formula of SGPA to percentage conversion and get
your performance grade in percentage value.

Example 1: SGPA = 8.1

Step 1: SGPA x 10 = 8.1 x 10 = 81
Step 2: (SGPA x 10) - 7.5 = 81 - 7.5 = 73.5%

Example 2: SGPA = 7.94

Step 1: SGPA x 10 = 7.94 x 10 = 79.4
Step 2: (SGPA x 10) - 7.5 = 79.4 - 7.5 = 71.9%

Letter Grades Approved by UGC

As per the UGC guidelines, letter grades are also
being used by many institutions or universities that
represent a particular grade point and a range of
percentages. The accepted Letter Grades with their
corresponding Grade Points & Percentage range are
listed below.

Difference Between SGPA and CGPA

CGPA is the abbreviation of Cumulative Grade Point
Average and it represents the performance of a
student in an academic year. While SGPA is the
performance grade for a semester. CGPA can be
calculated from SGPA after adding up all the SGPA
values of each semester and then dividing it by the
sum of the number of semesters.

For example, if the SGPA of a student in his 1st and

2nd semester is 6 and 8, respectively, then the CGPA
will be calculated as:

CGPA = (SGPA of Semester 1 + SGPA of Semester

2)/(Sum of Semesters)

= (6 + 8)/(1+1)

= 14/2

=7

Another difference between CGPA and SGPA is that

CGPA is used as a performance grade method at the
school levels while SGPA is used in higher studies.
