CHAPTER : 13

Grade : 6
Subject : Science
I. Define the following :

1. Magnetide : This is a naturally occurring mineral having magnetic property.

2 .Magnetic North Pole : This is the end of a magnet pointing towards geographical North direction .

3. Permanent magnets : This magnets that can retain their magnetism for a long time are called

Permanent magnets .

II.THE QUESTION BELOW CONSISTS OF AN ASSERTION AND A REASON. USE THE

FOLLOWING KEY TO CHOOSE THE APPROPRIATE ANSWER.
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.
Q1. Assertion (A): A simple magnetic compass can be prepared by inserting a magnetised
iron needle in a piece of cork and allow the cork to float in water kept in a bowl.
Reason (R): In the above arrangement the needle must touch water while floating.
Answer [c]
2. Q2. Assertion (A): Maglev is the train which does not require wheels.
Reason (R): Maglev train experiences very less friction.
Answer [b]
Q3. Assertion (A): Strength of electromagnet depends on the magnitude of current flowing
through them.
Reason (R): Electromagnets are used to lift heavy weights.
Answer[a]
4. Q4. Assertion (A): A compass is a magnetic device that is used by sailors to find
directions.
Reason (R): The sailor can find directions by use of dial of magnetic compass even if there is
no magnetic needle fixed in the compass.
Answer[c]
5. Q5. Assertion (A): The north pole of a freely suspended magnet points towards
geographic north.
Reason (R): Using pieces of iron we can make artificial magnets.
Answer [b]
III. Answer the following questions : [LOTS]

1.What are magnets ?

[Ans] A magnet is a piece of metal with a strong attraction to another metal

object .

2. Write any two properties of a magnet.

Solution:

Properties of a magnet are as follows

 It attracts objects made of Nickel, Cobalt and Iron.

 Like poles of two magnets repel each other and opposite poles attract each other.

3. Where are poles of a bar magnet located?

Solution:

On two ends of a bar magnet.

4. Diagram based question :

1. Show that a magnet has two poles. What are the properties of the poles of a magnet?
Ans. We know that pole is the point where the strength of the magnet is maximum. So more and more iron
particles will be attracted at poles of a magnet when we bring a magnet near the iron particles. We will
observe the crowdness of particles at the ends of magnet. This indicates the presence of two poles in a
magnet. Hence poles are present in a magnet in pair. If a magnet is divided into two parts, each part also
possesses a pair of poles.

IV. Answer the following questions : [LOTS]

Question 1: Write any two properties of a magnet.

Answer : Two properties of magnets are:

1. The magnet attracts metals, for example, nickel, cobalt, iron etc.
2. There are two poles of a magnet where, like poles of a magnet, repel each other, and unlike poles,
attracts each other.
Question 2: How is a compass used to find directions?

Answer : A compass always points in the north-south direction. The compass has a red arrow present in the
compass, indicating the north direction. If we get to know the north direction, then we can easily find out the
other direction.

V. .Answer the following : [HOTS]

Question 1: How do we determine the magnetic poles of the earth?

Answer : We can determine the magnetic poles of the earth in the following ways:

1. Earth consists of 2 geographical poles, the north pole and the south pole.
2. The North pole of the earth is Antarctica, and the south pole is named the arctic circle.
3. Earth’s magnetic poles are located near each other but not exactly in the same place as
geographical poles.
4. A magnetic compass will always align its needle to the earth’s north pole.

VI. Value Based Question :

:
1. Distinguish between the following.

(i) Magnetic materials and Non-magnetic materials

Answer:

Magnetic materials Non-magnetic materials

Materials which get attracted Materials which do not get

towards a magnet. attracted toward magnets.

For example, iron, copper, etc. For example, steel, wood, etc.
(ii) Natural magnets and Artificial magnets
Answer:

Natural magnets Artificial magnets

A magnet which comes naturally from Magnets produced by the action of

the earth. electrical circuits.

For example, lodestone. For example, electromagnet.
