Parents/Caregivers with concerns are invited to make appointments to meet with teachers during Parent-Teacher
Conferences on December 10 from 2-4 and 5-7 PM and December 11 from 2-4 PM. Parents can book at

Term 1 Comments: We will meet with Grade 9 students on January 22nd during PLT1. At that time, they will be
presented with three Career Education online assignments to be completed using MSTeams. These assignments
have specific due dates of Feb 5, 19 and March 5th. Support and access to technology for students is available
every PLT in Room 207.

DR - DRAMA 09 Term 1: EXTENDING

Term 1 Comments: The Drama 9 students have been working on building the ensemble in order to create
community, exploring and creating through movement and voice, and developing communication skills through
characterization. Specifically, students have been working on creating characters physically and vocally in their
Contemporary Mime performance and characterization scenes. Students will begin to apply these skills to
Reader's Theatre and Monologues.Liah demonstrates strong leadership skills when working with others,
participates actively in all class activities, and is confident during rehearsals and on stage. She takes risks when
creating characters and demonstrates outstanding application of the characterization skills. I encourage her to
continue to apply these skills to Reader's Theatre and Monologues.

EN - ENGLISH 09 Term 1: PROFICIENT

Term 1 Comments: Liah is a hardworking and collaborative student in English 9 and their active engagement in
class and small group discussions, along with their thoughtful contributions, is appreciated. Students have been
studying and developing their media literacy skills by reading, analyzing and evaluating a variety of texts. Liah can
identify and use persuasive techniques and share ideas orally and by writing; they are proficient in supporting
their responses with examples and details and using accurate and varied vocabulary to convey their ideas. Liah is
encouraged to continue working on their grammar and writing skills for clarity. For more detailed information
about the student's progress, the English 9 Learning Map was sent home with the student on December 5th. A
Learning Map provides a breakdown of their progress throughout the year thus far.

HE - FOOD STUDIES LEVEL 1 9-12 Term 1: 91% (A)

Term 1 Comments: Throughout the term, students learned the basics of kitchen safety and sanitation. They
completed their unit on flour mixtures and baking, focusing on the muffin, biscuit, and creaming methods.
Currently, students are well underway in their breakfast unit, with a focus on understanding and preparing a
variety of egg-based dishes.

Liah demonstrated an extending understanding and application of the cooking methodologies, concepts, and
competencies relevant to the course throughout the term. Liah is engaged in kitchen procedures and also works
well with peers at their unit during labs.

MA - MATHEMATICS 09 Term 1: PROFICIENT

Term 1 Comments: For Mathematics 9 this term, students have explored the big ideas such as number sense,
computational fluency, and algebra. So far, Liah has demonstrated a proficient understanding of the concepts and
competencies in Mathematics 9. Liah has demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of fractions, integers,
and algebra. Liah is working towards a more sophisticated understanding of fractions and integers involving all
operations. Liah can use multiple strategies to solve problems and is encouraged to evaluate which strategies are
more efficient or elegant. Liah works well with others in the classroom and is open to others' ideas in collaborative
groups.

PE - PHYSICAL & HEALTH EDUCATION 09 Term 1: EXTENDING

Term 1 Comments: This past fall, students have been exploring their health and how daily participation in
different types of physical activity influences our physical literacy, personal health/wellness and fitness goals,
while participating in the following workshops: touch football, basketball, health education (Sleep and Stress),
daily dynamic stretching and cardiovascular conditioning. Liah participates in all activities and has demonstrated
safe and appropriate fair play behaviours and attitude while demonstrating an excellent understanding of the
concepts and competencies in relation to the expected learning outcomes. Keep up the effort and continue to
move over the weekends too doing physical activities that you enjoy!

SC - SCIENCE 09 Term 1: PROFICIENT

Term 1 Comments: Liah is demonstrating a proficient understanding of the big idea that "cells are derived from
cells". We have reviewed cell structure, learned about DNA, and introduced the concepts of mitosis and meiosis.
Liah continues to develop the curricular competencies and parents are encouraged to read her Science Interactive
Notebook (S.I.N.) on a regular basis. In a self-reflection, Liah writes "I would like to improve the neatness of my S.
I.N., and make sure to glue things in immediately." Moving forward, Liah is encouraged to review & maintain her
S.I.N., seek help when needed during PLT, and keep up the good effort.

ML - SPANISH 09 Term 1: PROFICIENT

Term 1 Comments: In the first learning period, Spanish 9 students covered Weather, Calendar, Number, and
colour-related vocabulary as well as simple conversational activities.
Liah is very engaged and actively participates in our everyday Spanish language routines.
Liah is actively working to build a strong vocabulary to use, along with more exposure and practice, to build
Spanish fluency.

SS - SOCIAL STUDIES 09 Term 1: PROFICIENT

Term 1 Comments: In this first term, students have explored Canada's Geography (including climate and physical
features), as well as begun their journey through the revolutionary age, starting with the English Civil War. Liah
has demonstrated a proficient level of Social Studies inquiry processes and skills. She has a great attitude and
works hard in class. I greatly appreciate her contributions in discussions, and I encourage her to continue to share
her ideas.
