ACCORDING TO PURPOSE
TYPES OF SPEECH
ACCORDING TO
There are different types of
speech according to purpose.
Informative Speech
Demonstrative Speech
Persuasive Speech
Entertaining Speech
1.Expository / Informative
Speech – this speech serves to
provide interesting and
useful information to your
audience; a speech that aims to
give an audience
information on a specific subject
and to educate them.
Examples of Informative speech ideas:
College professor lecturing on a specific topic
during a class.
Guest speaker presenting information to a group of
students about how to apply for
college.
Company president presenting the company’s last
quarter sales to a group of board
members.
Doctor talking to a group about ways to avoid heart
disease.
To write an informative speech, you first
choose a topic-either one that you
already know about or one that you are
willing to research and learn about. Then,
you outline and draft your informative
speech based on the topic, key points, and
details and information you want to give
about your topic.
Four types of
informative speeches

speech about objects or

people,
speech about processess
speech about events
and speech about concepts.
Informative speech Different Patterns of
Organization
A. Chronological Pattern. This can be used if you want to present the
history,
evolution, or development of your topic in a sequential order, from
past to present or
beginning to end.
B. Spatial Pattern – this pattern is used when you want to talk about
the physical
structure of an object or the way things fit together in a certain
space (Glendale
Community College; University of Washington Tacoma). Topics that
deal with
geography fit this pattern best.
C. Topical/Categorical Pattern. This can be used if you
want to inform your
audience about the main features, descriptions, or
categories of your topic.
D. Cause-Effect Pattern. This can be used if you want
to show the causal
relationship of events or phenomena.
2.Demonstrative Speech is a form of
Informative Speech where the
speaker’s primary purpose is to
teach the audience how to complete
a task (or process), and this is
largely accomplished by
demonstrating the task( or process),
through a series of steps.
3.Persuasive Speech – this speech works
to convince people to change in some
way: they think, the way they do
something, or to start doing something
that they
are not currently doing; to convince the
audience of an idea or change the point of
view and stance of your audience.
Examples of Persuasive speech ideas:
A teenager attempting to convince her parents that
she needs to be able to stay
out until 11 pm instead of 10 pm.
A student council president trying to convince
school administrators to allow the
students to have a social dance right after the graduation rites.
A lawyer giving a closing argument in a court,
arguing about whether the defendant is innocent or
guilty of the crime.
4. Entertainment Speech – a speech that
is written in order to please and
entertain your
audience; a speech whose sole purpose is
to have the audience enjoy the
presentation; to make the audience
smile, relax, enjoy, and maybe even
laugh
their heads off.
Steps in Writing an Entertaining Speech
1. Choose! Choose a light topic. Remember, you
are there to give the audience a
good time.
2. Enjoy! If you exude confidence and you
obviously enjoy the moment, the
audience will enjoy your presence, too.
3. Simplify! Simplify the flow of your speech.
Your audience does not need a
mentally exhausting message.
