Analytical Essay

Should society embrace genetic engineering, or are its risks too significant to justify its use?

Genetic engineering has the potential to revolutionize humanity by eradicating diseases,

improving agricultural yields, and even enhancing human capabilities. Techniques like CRISPR
allow scientists to target and modify specific genes, offering solutions to conditions like cystic
fibrosis and cancer. These advancements could dramatically improve the quality of life for
millions. For example, genetically modified crops have already reduced hunger in developing
countries by increasing yields and making plants resistant to pests.

However, the risks of genetic engineering cannot be overlooked. One of the greatest concerns
is the ethical dilemma of "designer babies," where parents could choose traits like intelligence or
physical appearance for their children. This would likely widen the gap between socioeconomic
classes, as only the wealthy could afford these enhancements. Additionally, the long-term
effects of genetic modifications on humans and ecosystems remain unknown. Unintended
mutations could result in irreversible consequences, potentially creating new diseases or
disrupting natural biodiversity.

While the promise of genetic engineering is undeniable, its risks demand cautious
implementation. Regulations must be put in place to ensure equitable access and minimize
harmful outcomes. Only through careful oversight can society fully embrace genetic engineering
while safeguarding against its dangers.

2. Comparative Analysis

Which has had or is likely to have a greater influence on society: the industrial revolutions or the
current technological revolution?

The industrial revolutions were pivotal in transforming society. The first industrial revolution
introduced mechanized production, replacing manual labor with machines and leading to mass
production. This sparked urbanization, created jobs, and boosted economies. For instance, the
invention of the steam engine revolutionized transportation, enabling faster movement of goods
and people. These advancements laid the foundation for modern infrastructure and shaped
industrialized nations.

On the other hand, the current technological revolution, driven by AI, robotics, and automation,
has a broader and more profound influence. Unlike the industrial revolutions, which primarily
transformed manufacturing, today’s technologies impact nearly every sector, from healthcare to
education. For example, AI can diagnose diseases with unparalleled accuracy, while automation
is reshaping workplaces by performing tasks more efficiently than humans. Moreover, the
technological revolution connects the globe through digital networks, creating unprecedented
levels of information exchange and collaboration.
While the industrial revolutions were instrumental in building the framework of modern society,
the technological revolution is reshaping it at an even faster pace. Its influence extends beyond
physical industries to ethics, global connectivity, and the nature of human interaction. Therefore,
the current technological revolution is likely to have a greater and more lasting impact on
society.

3. Translation:
