Chapter 2.

P20 – 24

 Understanding
1. Because the first sentence is the most important information.

2. Because there is golden beaches and sparkling sea.

3. The developer wanted to build 100 bedrooms and eco-friendly theme park, but others disagreed
because they thought if too many things built, the town will lose the tranquil atmosphere and
picturesque beauty.

4. Yes. Because only one developer wanted to build something, and others disagreed. (but I think for
that town I also think they shouldn’t build too many things.)

 Word Builder
1. a) Because peaceful is uncommon word than little. Peaceful better describes this city than little.

b) Because sandy is uncommon word than yellow. Sandy better describes the texture of beach than
yellow.

c) Because sparkling is uncommon word than clean. Sparkling better describes the windless and
transparent visual image of water than clean.

2. a) steep

b) brisk

c) cramped

3. I had an admirable holiday near Bellavista. The weather was superior. The hotel had a massive
swimming pool and I enjoyed agreeable meals.

 Using Direct Speech

1. “Look to the future,” he said. “Our town is a backwater. We are dying a slow death.”

2. a) “I think the hotel will dwarf the whole town,” said one speaker.

b) “I think,” said a shopkeeper thoughtfully, “that this development will increase my profits.”

c) “Aren’t you being selfish?” asked a little old lady.

“Well, perhaps,” answered the shopkeeper. “But isn’t my future important too.”
 Using Indirect Speech
1. Senora Alonso said that mayor was looking very worried.

2. The mayor said that he is tired of people who keep on shouting at him. He was only doing his best for
this town.

3. The reporter said that he wondered what will happen. He had never been to such an angry meeting.
There was a lot of resentment there.

2. Right : I believe that one hotel will lead to other monstrosities springing up in every little corner of our
beloved Bellavista. As a recent resident of Bellavista, I can naturally understand the controversy caused
by the proposal to build a hotel.
Wrong : What a terrible tragedy!

3. I think they shouldn’t build hotels and eco-theme park etc… because if something built naturally
visitors will come and later, too many visitors will come. And if that happens, I think the town will lose
their tranquil atmosphere and picturesque beauty. Tranquil atmosphere and picturesque beauty are the
special mood that only this town has in this complex and busy world, so they shouldn’t build many
things.
