ACTIVITY #1: MATCH ME!

Your data analysis methods will depend on the type of data you
collect and how you prepare it for analysis. Data can often be analyzed
both quantitatively and qualitatively. For example, survey responses
could be analyzed qualitatively by studying the meanings of responses
or quantitatively by studying the frequencies of responses.

Directions. Analyze critically each given scenario. Choose the best data frequency/weight that will
best describe each of the given conditions presented by writing the letter of your answer on the
blank provided before each item number.

LESSON A. DATA INTERPRETATIONS

Great day guys! We are now ready to take the first step in our
data interpretations. Remember that you can present and interpret your
data using several approaches – textual, tabular, graphical and others.

The easiest way to report the results of quantitative research is to frame them around any
research questions or hypotheses that you formulated.
For each question or hypothesis, present:
 The relevant results, including a reminder of the type of analysis used (more detailed
description of your analysis should go into your methodology section).
 If you assessed validity and reliability, include these results too.
 How each result relates to the question or whether the hypothesis was supported.
 You can highlight the most important trends, differences, and relationships among
the data, but do not speculate on their meaning or consequences – this should be
saved for the discussion and conclusion sections.
 If you have results that are not directly relevant to answering your questions, or extra
information to help the reader understand your results that doesn’t fit into the
methods section (such as the full survey), you can include these in an appendix.

Reminders:
1. To analyze numerical data, you will probably use statistical methods. These generally require
applications such as Excel, SPSS or SAS.
2. Statistical methods can be used to analyze averages, frequencies, patterns,
and correlations between variables. When creating your research design, you should clearly
define your variables and formulate hypotheses about the relations between them. Then you
can choose appropriate statistical methods to test these hypotheses.

LEVELS IN DATA INTERPRETATION

Level 1. Discuss the Results (Enumerate and Discuss)

From the given data in your table, enumerate (all significant findings) and discuss the said
results based on the purpose of the study.
 Take a look on the given example below (from the stud of Tallungan, 2020):
Table 4. Frequency and percentage distribution of the participants’ profile in terms of age.
Age F %

16 years old 41 51.25

17 years old 22 27.5

18 years old 13 16.25

19 years old 4 5

Total 80 100

Mean 16.98

Table 4 shows the frequency and percentage distribution of participants’ profile in terms of
age. Specifically, majority of the participants have an age of 16 years old with a frequency of 41 and
a percentage of 51.25 %. This was followed by the participants with an age of 17 years old with the
frequency of 22 and a percentage of 27.5%. Some of the participants have an age of 18 years old
with a frequency of 13 and a percentage of 14%. Meanwhile, the remaining participants are in the
age of 19 years old with the frequency of 4 and a percentage of 5%.
 Take note, discuss only what you have enlisted in the table. Hence, do not deviate from the
main purpose of the study.
 Take a look on another example below (from the study of Tallungan, 2020). The highlighted
discussion pertains to the first level interpretation.

Figure 8. Profile distribution according to ethnic affilation.

17; 21%
7; 9%

Figure 8 presents frequency and percentage distribution of participants’ profile in terms of

ethnicity/IP Group. Most of the participants are Ilokanos with a frequency of 35 (43.75%). Followed
by the participants who are Ifugaos with the frequency of 17 (21.25%). Other participants with a
frequency of 13 (16.25%) belong to other IP groups like Kalanguya, Bisaya, Isinay Kankanaey and
Ibaloy. While participants who are Gaddang have a frequency of 7 (8.75%). The rest of the
participants do not belong to any IP group with a frequency of 8 (10%).
This indicates that the HUMSS strand of NVGCHS is multi-culturally diverse. Since
NVGCHS is located at Nueva Vizcaya and Nueva Vizcaya is known for its 18 IP groups living in
the province, making NVGCHS culturally diverse as well because according to Tallungan et. al.
(2017), as a microcosm of the society, universities generally follow the population trend of the
places in which they are situated and students from neighboring towns or provinces even from far-
flung areas flock to where education is offered.

Level 2. Determine the Implication of the Results (Implication)

At this point, you are to determine the implication/s of the data or results of your data interpretation.
You may include general mean if the data convey numerical value.

 Take a look on the given pie graph below (from the stud of Tallungan, 2020). The highlighted
information pertains to the second level interpretation.

flung areas flock to where education is offered.

Level 3. Strengthen your Discussion by Associating the Result/s to Related Literature used in
the Study (Association)
Justify the results by associating it to the review of your related literatures and/or studies.
 Take a look again on the given discussions on the pie graph below (from the stud of
Tallungan, 2020). The highlighted information pertains to the third level interpretation.

LESSON B. STATISTICS TO ANALYZE DATA

The inferential question of your study needs specific statistical
treatment to arrive at specific and scientific answer. Depending on your
type of data and research design, there are several appropriate statistical
tools to utilize. Continue with your learning module. Good luck!

Quantitative Data Analysis

Once data is collected, you may need to process it before it can be analyzed. For
example, survey and test data may need to be transformed from words to numbers.
Then, to analyze your data, you can use descriptive and/or inferential statistics to answer
your research questions.
Descriptive statistics will give you a summary of your data and include measures
of averages and variability. You can also use graphs, scatter plots and frequency tables
to visualize your data and check for any trends or outliers.
Using inferential statistics, you can make predictions or generalizations based on
your data. You can test your hypothesis or use your sample data to estimate
the population parameter.
Examples of descriptive and inferential statistics. You hypothesize that first-year
college students procrastinate more than fourth-year college students. You collect data
on procrastination levels of the two groups using 7-point self-rating scales.
Research Methods for Analyzing Data
Research Qualitative or When to use
method quantitative?
Statistical Quantitative To analyze data collected in a statistically valid
analysis manner (e.g. from experiments, surveys, and
observations).
Meta-analysis Quantitative To statistically analyze the results of a large
collection of studies.
Can only be applied to studies that collected data in a
statistically valid manner.

Thematic Qualitative To analyze data collected from interviews, focus

analysis groups or textual sources.
To understand general themes in the data and how
they are communicated.

Content analysis Either To analyze large volumes of textual or visual data

collected from surveys, literature reviews, or other
sources.
Can be quantitative (i.e. frequencies of words) or
qualitative (i.e. meanings of words).

Verify your understanding. List some important concepts you have acquired from the
lesson.
