RECOMMENDATIONS
What is Literature review in Research?
- involves collecting, identifying, and summarizing
existing research and writings related to a specific
topic.
- this includes research studies, as well as conceptual
articles that offer frameworks and perspectives for
understanding the topic.
When do we use Literature review?
A researcher incorporates a literature review at
multiple stages and in various aspects of the research
process including:
ü background of the study

ü statement of the problem

ü methodology section

ü discussion and conclusion section

LITERATURE REVIEW
is a review of “all” published science relevant to the
topic. The purpose is to assess the current state of the
research, and identify gaps in understanding and/or
suggest future avenues of exploration, rather than to
present new research of one’s own.
CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

§ Discusses, investigates, and critiques what the

other authors and researchers have done in
relation to your present study.

§ The Statement of the Problem and Background

of the Study from Chapter 1 may help you
decide whether a certain literature/ study is
relevant or not.
CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

§ Should include both works from foreign and local

authors.
§ As recent as possible (may be 5 years back)
§ You as the researcher should coherently, clearly,
and concisely write Chapter 2

SOURCE OF RELATED STUDIES
1. UNDERGRADUATE
RESEARCH
-These are works of college students who
are still earning their bachelor’s degree.
-These projects aim to contribute
original knowledge to a specific field,
even if on a smaller scale compared to
professional research.
SOURCE OF RELATED STUDIES
2. MASTERS THESIS

A significant piece of written research

required for many master’s degree programs.
It’s essentially an extended academic paper
that demonstrates a student’s ability to
conduct indepent research, analyze
information, and
contribute to their field of study.

3. DOCTORAL DISSERTATIONS
A dissertation is the culminating
requirement for a doctoral degree (Ph.D.,
Ed.D., etc.). It’s the ulminate test of a
student’s ability to conduct independent,
original, and in-depth research.

4. INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCHES
- Institutional research is “research
conducted within an institution of higher
education to provide information which
supports institution planning, policy
formation and decision marking”.
- Research activities include the collection,
analysis and interoretation of institutional
data to promote institutinal effectiveness in
all areas of the instituation. (Citadel.edu)

TECHNIQUES IN ORGANIZING SOURCES
1. Traditional - Locale Literature Foreign Literature
Locale Studies Foreign Studies
2. Chronological - from older to recent year
3. Thematic - according to key themes
4. Methodological - comparing different research
methods being used across studies
5. Theoretical - discussing opposing theories or models
from sources
WHAT ARE THE STEPS IN WRITING CHAPTER 2?
1. SEARCHING for relevant literature using databases, journals,
books, and other academic sources.
2. ORGANIZING the literature by themes, trends, or chronological
order.
3. WRITING the review which includes summarizing the key
points, analyzing the contributions, and limitations of the existing
research, and discussing how it relates to the study.

4. Create a Literature Map

It is a visual representation that groups the
literature on your topic and shows how your
study will fit into and add to the existing
research. (Creswell, 2018)
ACTIVITY 2: SYNTHESIZE IT!
Using your collected sources, summarize and
paraphrase the key findings from the existing
literature coherently, clearly and concisely, then
synthesize these insights to present your own
perspective on the subject.
