Initial side

In trigonometry, an angle of formation is an angle formed by the starting and ending

positions of a ray that rotates about its endpoint. Standard position refers to an angle
where its vertex is located at the origin of a coordinate plane, and one side of the angle lies
on the x-axis also called “initial side”; the other side is then calls the terminal side, and
positive rotations are measured counterclockwise from the initial side while negative y
rotations are measured clockwise from the initial side. 257°

REMEMBER : 103°

To convert from degrees to radians, multiply the number of degrees by π/180.

To convert from radians to degrees, multiply the number of radians by 180/π.

How to figure out the angle by the number of revolutions :

If the rotation for the angle is less than 1 revolution in a counterclockwise direction,
then the measure of the angle is between 0° and 360°. If the rotation the angle is more than
1 revolution but less than 2 revolutions, then the measure of the angle is between 360° and
720°.

Practice problems :

1-) A positive angle coterminal to 130°

130°

130+360=490

2-) a negative coterminal to 130°

130°

-230°
360-130 = -230

For each angle, find the nearest two positive coterminal angles
and the nearest two negative coterminal angles :
(+) (-)

3-) 84° 360° + 84° = 444° 360° - 84°= -276°

(360X42) +84 = 804º (360x2) -84 = -636

4-) -π/3

2π - π/3 = 5π/3 -π/3 - 2π = 7π/3
2π + 5π/3 = 11π/3 -π/3 x (2π -2)=-13π/3

Acapulco, Mexico and Hyderabad, India both lie at 17" north latitude, and lie very nearly
halfway around the world from each other in an cast-west you could fly from Acapulco
directly west to Hyderabad or fly directly north to Hyderabad. Which way would be shorter,
and by how much? Use 3960 miles for Earth's radius. (Hint: To fly directly north, you would
go from 17" north latitude to 90" north latitude, and then back down to 17" north latitude.)

1-) west : circumference = 2 x π x r = 2 x π x 3790 = 23820 miles. Then , flying directly west
would be 23820 miles /2 =11,910 miles.
2-) north: distance to North Pole = (90-17) miles x (π/180) x 3860 = 4410 miles. Distance to North Pole
by flying = 4410+4410 =8,820 miles.

Then flying north would be shorter than flying west. By almost 11910-8820 = 3390 miles.
