INTRODUCTION TO CHILDREN LITERATURE

WHO IS A CHILD ?
A child is typically defined as a young human being who is still in the process of
growing and developing physically, mentally, and emotionally. In terms of age, a
child is generally considered to be someone between the ages of infancy and
adolescence, typically ranging from birth to around 18 years old. Children are
characterized by their curiosity, imagination, and capacity for learning and
growth. They often rely on adults for guidance and support as they navigate the
world around them and begin to form their own identities. In the context of
children's literature, the target audience is usually considered to be children
from infants to teenagers, depending on the specific age range targeted by the
book or story..
DEFINITION OF LITERATURE
Literature is a body of written works that are considered to have artistic or intellectual
value and are often regarded as works of art. It encompasses a wide range of genres, styles,
and forms, including novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, and more. Literature
reflects the ideas, beliefs, cultures, and experiences of individuals and societies, offering
insights into the human condition and the complexities of the world. It serves as a medium
for expressing creativity, emotions, and thoughts, as well as for exploring themes, issues,
and perspectives in a meaningful and impactful way. Literature also plays a vital role in
preserving and transmitting cultural heritage, shaping identities, and fostering
understanding and empathy among readers..
TYPES OF LITERATURE
Written literature refers to literary works that are composed and recorded in
written form, whether in print or digital format. This includes a wide range of
genres, styles, and forms such as novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays,
and more. Written literature is created through the written word and uses
language as the primary medium of expression to convey ideas, emotions,
perspectives, and experiences.

Written literature plays a crucial role in capturing and preserving human

creativity, thought, and cultural heritage. It is a means of communication and
artistic expression that allows authors to share their stories, insights, and
imaginations with readers. Written literature can be found in books,
magazines, newspapers, online publications, and various digital platforms,
making it accessible to a wide audience and contributing to the richness and
diversity of the literary landscape.
"Unwritten literature" is a term sometimes used to refer to forms of literature
that are communicated or preserved through oral tradition rather than in
written form. This includes storytelling, folk tales, myths, legends, songs,
chants, proverbs, and other forms of cultural expression that have been passed
down verbally from generation to generation.

Oral literature is an essential part of many cultures and traditions worldwide

and serves as a means of preserving and transmitting knowledge, beliefs, and
values. It often reflects the history, customs, and worldview of a particular
community or society. While oral literature may not be captured in written
texts, it is recognized as a valuable form of artistic expression and cultural
heritage.
