Guide to
Midjourney5
Prompt
Parameters.
Prompting in Midjourney is
everything.

Luckily, version 5 is crazy good.

But...

The user experience can still be complicated.

Have you’ve looked at prompts and said...

“Wtf is (--s 750) or (--ar 16:9)”

Don’t worry…it’s not as complicated as it

looks.
They are Midjourney parameters.

And they change the image format or style.

Do you always need to use them?

No.

But can they add a different element to your

images?

Yes.

So let’s take a look at (4) MJ parameters

that will give you more control.
Before we dive in…

Wtf is a parameter?
Parameters are text “codes” at the end of
the prompt.

Typically, they look like this (--ar 3:2),

(--s 1000), (--q 1), etc.

You can see them in the image below.

To add parameters to your prompt you
need to add (2) dashes...

(--)

The parameter...

(--s)

A space and then the value...

(--s <value>)

Finished parameter: --s 500

Alright, enough chit-chat.

Let’s take a look at some beginner

parameters.
01. Aspect Ratio (--ar)
Aspect Ratio is the width-to-height ratio of the
image.

For example...

A square image is 1:1.

This impacts the shape and composition the

image.
Aspect Ratio in Prompting.
Prompt Parameter: --ar <width>:<height>

Values: Unlimited with MJ version 5

Midjourney Default: 1:1

Format Example: --ar 3:2 or --aspect 3:2

Common Aspect Ratios.
1:1: Best for standard images [Midjourney
Default].

3:2: Common in print photography.

16:9: Widescreen displays commonly used for

high-definition television, computer monitors,
Youtube videos, etc.

9:16: Common in smartphone display.

5:4: Common in digital photography.

21:9: Common in ultra-widescreen displays.

Aspect Ratio.
Prompt: macro photography of a hummingbird feeding from
a flower.

(If you don't add [--ar <value>] Midjourney will produce

aspect ratio 1:1 as it's default image setting)
If you want a different aspect
ratio...
Add --ar <value>:<value> to the end of the
prompt.

For example, we'll use a 16:9 aspect ratio in the

next image.
Aspect Ratio.
Prompt: macro photography of a hummingbird feeding from
a flower --ar 16:9
Now let's look at a few different
aspect ratios and their outputs.
***Disclaimer...the prompts below have multiple
aspect ratios listed.

You only have to use (1) parameter in your

prompt.

Example: macro photography of a hummingbird

feeding from a flower --ar 16:9
Aspect Ratio.
Prompt: macro photography of a humming bird feeding from
an orchid {--ar 1:1, --ar 16:9, --ar 2:3, --ar 3:2}

--ar 1:1 --ar 16:9

--ar 2:3 --ar 3:2

Ok, we've got that down.

Now let's inject some creativity.

02. Stylize (--s)
Style parameter adjusts how much creative
liberty MJ takes with your prompt.

Lower value = close to prompt (less artistic)

Higher value = more artistic

***MJ version 5 is trained on images that have

more artistic color expression, composition, and
aesthetic.
Stylize in Prompting.
Prompt Parameter: --s <value>

Value Range: 0-1000

Midjourney Default: 100

Example: --s 750 or --stylize 750

Stylize.
Prompt: futuristic fashion photo shoot {--s 0, --s 500, --s 750, --s
1000}

--s 0 --s 500

-s 750 --s 1000

Notice the difference?
The lower value is a flatter image with less detail.

The higher value added more reflections, lighting

elements, background elements, texture, etc.

Let's look at another image...

--s 0 --s 1000

Stylize.
Prompt: dune buggy racing in the desert {--s 0, --s 250, --s 600, --
s 1000}

--s 0 --s 250

-s 600 --s 1000

Big difference.
This parameter can completely alter your image.

So play around with it.

Let's keep going...

--s 0 --s 1000

We've explored stylize.

Now let's inject some chaos...

03. Chaos (--c)
Chaos will influence how "varied" the image grids
are.

Lower value = closely related image grids

Higher value = highly varied image grids

This is useful if you're not sure what you're looking

for.
Chaos in Prompting.
Prompt Parameter: --c <value>

Value Range: 0-100

Midjourney Default: 0

Format example: --c 50 or --chaos 50

Chaos.
Prompt: The Joker from Batman causing chaos in Gotham City {--c 0,
--c 30, --c 75, --c 100}

--c 0 --c 30

--c 75 --c 100

Again, massive difference.
The lower values produce closely related images.

The higher values produce a wide range of images.

--c 0 --c 100

Who doesn't love some chaos?

Now let's move onto Quality.

04. Quality (--q)
Quality effects how much time is spent rendering
and image.

Lower value = less time rendering

Higher value = more time rendering

Higher Quality value doesn't always produce a

better image.

Lower quality will be better for abstract work.

Higher quality will be better for highly detailed

images with a number of elements.
Quality in Prompting.
Prompt Parameter: --q <value>

Value Range: 0.25-1

Midjourney Default: 1

Format example: --q .25 or --quality .5

Quality (Abstract Image).
Prompt: neo-traditional japanese tattoo illustration {--q .25, --q .5, --
q .75, --q 1}

--q .25 --q .5

--q .75 --q 1

Noticeable difference.
The lower quality produced a more realistic tattoo.

However, this is all subjective preference.

But this will give you the control.

Now let's look at a more detailed image....

--q .25 --q 1
Quality (Detailed Image).
Prompt: epic rave in the jungle {--q .25, --q .5, --q .75, --q 1}

--q .25 --q .5

--q .75 --q 1

Much better.
The higher quality value produced a better image.

The trees, the people, the structure are all more

defined and crisp.

--q .25 --q 1

Now let's put all of these elements
together.
Humming Bird.
Prompt: macro photography of a hummingbird feeding from
a flower --ar 5:4 --s 500 --q 1 --c 5
Futuristic Fashion.
Prompt: futuristic fashion photo shoot --ar 3:2 --s 1000 --q 1 --c
70
The Joker.
Prompt: The Joker from Batman causing chaos in Gotham City
--ar 16:9 --s 850 --q 1 --c 40
Tattoo
Prompt: neo-classical japanese tattoo illustration, vibrant
colors, defined lines --ar 1:1 --s 900 --q .33 --c 10
Quick Tips.
You don't have to use these parameters on every
image.

I use Aspect Ratio and Stylize the most consistently.

Chaos can get funky...so take that for what it is.

If you're going for photo realistic use a higher

Quality value.

If you're not getting an image you want with a

normal prompt...

Play around with the parameters to give yourself

options.
Until next time...
That's it.
