Introduction
• An ICC profile is a description of the color that a specific
printer, ink and media combination produces for any given
digital inputs, and conversely, the digital inputs needed to
produce any given color.
• Depending on the digital inputs that a given printer accepts,
we can distinguish different types of printer profiles:
• RGB profiles are used for printers that accept three values
per input image pixel, interpreted as the amount of Red,
Green and Blue light that compose each pixel.
• CMYK profiles are used for printers that accept four values
per input image pixel, interpreted as the amount of Cyan,
Magenta, Yellow and Black ink that compose each pixel. 8

Introduction
•Whenever color management (based on icc profiles) is being
used, there are at least two color profiles involved: one to
describe input color space, another one to describe the output
color space. The two are coupled via a profile connection
space, device independent, typically CIELab.
•With respect to the printer series it is important to note that
both RGB and CMYK are abstractions compared to the ink
sets used by the printers, whether 8 inks or 12 inks.
•The RGB or CMYK inputs that the printer receives are converted
internally to the appropriate 8 or 12 ink representation, in
a process known as color separation.

OS limitations - use of ICC profiles

•It is important to note that any kind of printer profile (RGB or
CMYK) can be used to print any kind of input file (RGB, CMYK,
gray, etc). However, the most common versions of the Windows
and Mac operating systems in use today do not permit anything
other than RGB data to be sent from applications to printers via
printer drivers.
•For print paths that do not use standard printer drivers, this
limitation does not exist.
•The operating system limitations described above imply that
only RGB profiles can be used with application based color
management, while both RGB and CMYK profiles can be used
with printer based color management, when using standard printer
drivers.

Application vs Printer Color Management

This limitation is supposed to disappear with Microsoft Vista (using XPS print paths) and

used with application based color management, while both RGB and CMYK profiles can
be used with printer based color manageme nt, when using standard printer drivers.

• Using RGB printer profiles all of these types of color conversions are possible :
Application Color Management:

a pplication printer
CMYK file → (CMYK → Lab) input + (Lab → RGB’) output driver print

a pplication printer

RGB file → (RGB → Lab) input + (Lab → RGB’) driver print

Printer Color Management:

a pplication printer
RGB file driver (RGB → Lab) input + (Lab → RGB’) output → print

• Using CMYK profiles only this type of color conversion is possible:

Printer Color Management:
a pplication printer
RGB file driver (RGB → Lab) input + (Lab → CMYK’) output → print
